"While this is an unfortunate setback, I am encouraged and grateful that my doctor said the procedure was a success. I am looking forward to attacking the rehabilitation process this afternoon with my team and working hard to get back out on tour as soon as possible.

"Thanks for all your incredible support. I will check in with all of you soon."

"Everything is against Villa," complained a rather glum-looking Remi Garde after his side were beaten at West Ham.

Garde was fed up about having an early penalty shout turned down. "I'm sorry for the referee but it was a clear penalty," said the boss.

It got worse when Jordan Ayew was sent off for elbowing Aaron Cresswell - and even worse when Michail Antonio and Cheikhou Kouyate scored to secure three points for the Hammers.

    When have you confounded expectations?

Stefan Glosby: I'm rubbish at sport, but I somehow held the class record for the highest individual innings in stoolball all the way through junior school. Still makes me proud now.

Spencer Sanford: Cup game, 2-1 up in a close game against team three divisions above us. Free kick on the half way line, step up as CB to get the ball in the box. Ends up top right corner. Game settled. Run round like a kid at Christmas.

Nishaal Rooplall: Graduated as 5th best engineer in South Africa. Even I didn't expect that let alone everyone else.

What about Manchester United? They played good football and - brace yourselves - it was exciting.

Louis van Gaal and his players were jeered after defeat by Southampton in their previous home game - but it was all a sharp contrast against Stoke as, inspired by youngster Antony Martial, the Reds won at a canter.

Jesse Lingard and Wayne Rooney were also on the scoresheet and it was a win United - in fifth place, five points behind fourth-placed Arsenal - fully deserved.
