It was a bad night for Arsenal fans after the Gunners were held by Southampton and dropped to fourth, behind North London rivals Spurs.

Arsene Wenger's side had numerous chances but were unable to break down a resilient Saints side, who have now gone four games without conceding.

Worryingly for the Wenger, who opted not to recruit another striker in the transfer window, his side have gone three Premier League games without scoring.

The result, though, is further proof of the resilience Ronald Koeman has instilled in Southampton, who have picked up 10 points in their last four matches.

Over in East Anglia, Harry Kane scored twice as Tottenham kept up the chase at the top with an easy win at Norwich.

Dele Alli tapped in inside the first two minutes and Kane stroked in the second from the spot after Alli - who came off with an illness at half-time - was fouled in trying to follow up Kane's saved shot.

Kane fired his second of the night from 15 yards after Eriksen had dispossessed Martin Olsson.

"The performance was very good. I'm happy with three points. The first half was fantastic," said Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino.

Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce said he had to act in the January transfer window in order to battle the drop, and he gave debuts to signings Kone, and substitutes Dame N'Doye and Whabi Khazri.

In return he got what he says was the "best performance since I've been here".

The Black Cats have conceded more goals than anyone in the league, but Kone seemed to add some steel and another January acquisition Jan Kirchhoff impressed in a holding role.

"The points aren't there, but the positives are.," said manager Sam Allardyce, though he did admit that results elsewhere mean his side are now in "big trouble".

Leicester can't relax for a minute though, with Man City continuing to snap at their heels.

The Blues responded to the news of manager Manuel Pellegrini's summer departure with a hard-earned win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Pellegrini - who will be replaced by Pep Guardiola - saw Sergio Aguero gather a deflected cross to coolly finish with the outside of his foot.

Jones forced a Joe Hart save late on as City - sluggish on the night - held on.

    Leicester 2-0 Liverpool

Jamie Vardy - who is set to sign a new three-and-a-half-year deal with the Foxes - had never scored a Premier League goal from outside the box with his first 21 top-flight attempts.

He let Mahrez's long ball bounce before smashing it over Mignolet. After the game he revealed he had seen the keeper stray off his line on previous occasions and decided to try his luck.

And good news for Vardy - look who was in the crowd watching...

Shall we start taking Leicester's chances of winning the Premier League title seriously now?

The Foxes beat Liverpool to stay three points clear at the top, with Jamie Vardy - as you might already be aware - scoring a brace, the first of which was a brilliant 25-yard half-volley.

Leicester fully deserved their victory, with Mignolet touching an Okazaki header onto the bar in the first half.

So then, two matches in the Premier League later and interesting ones they are too.

Everton host big-spending Newcastle (who, you lot reckoned in a Sportsday vote yesterday, did the best business in the January transfer window), while Chelsea travel to Watford.

More on those later, but first let's have a look back at Tuesday's matches, starting with Leicester and that man Vardy...

Some breaking cricket news to begin with... Matt Henry's hostile spell of pace bowling has helped New Zealand ease to a 159-run win over Australia in the first one-day international.

The 24-year-old took 3-20 in his first four overs at Eden Park as he and Trent Boult reduced the visitors to 41 for six in their pursuit of 308 to win.

The Black Caps were helped by an lbw decision against David Warner, who was told not to review by partner George Bailey. But ball tracking suggested the ball would have gone well over the stumps, causing Warner to slam his bat into his pads as he watched the replay on the big screen.

The next game in the three-match ODI series moves is in Wellington on Saturday.
