Belfast boxer Paddy Barnes says he's "over the moon" to have been named flag bearer for the Irish Olympic team in Rio.

"I hold this honour up there just as high as having won the medals in London and Beijing," said the twice Olympic light-flyweight bronze medallist.

Barnes' team-mate Katie Taylor won gold in London after being the Irish flag bearer at the opening ceremony in the British capital and the Belfast man is confident that he will achieve the same feat.

There is a special programme at 21:00 BST tonight on BBC Radio 5 live about the making of Amir Khan.

The Briton and his trainer Virgil Hunter have been talking about his forthcoming super-fight with Mexico’s Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. The fight will be live from Las Vegas on 5 live on 7 May.

Khan said: "People always talk about when Sugar Ray Leonard moved up and fought Marvin Hagler, and how he made history by beating him. 

"By me going into the fight, going up a weight, fighting Canelo who’s a monster, has big speed, big power and everything, do I really need to take this fight? The only reason I’m taking it is I want to make history and I know I can beat him."

Canadian side Toronto Wolfpack will take part in England's third tier League One from next year.

Former Bradford, Wigan and Great Britain coach Brian Noble has been confirmed as their director of rugby, with ex-Leigh boss Paul Rowley the head coach. 

They will also take part in the Challenge Cup.

The club will not receive central funding from the Rugby Football League but are likely to get special dispensation to exceed the salary cap to enable them to run a full-time team.

They have pledged to cover all costs of visiting teams, who will fly out on a Thursday, play on Saturday and return the following day. 

The squad, which will be largely English players, will be based at Bradford and fly out to Toronto to play their fixtures in blocks.

Their recruitment drive includes a reality TV show.

Forest Green Rovers, who have missed out on automatic promotion to the Football League, have 'parted company' with manager Ady Pennock.

The National League side can still win promotion to League Two via the play-offs.

Villarreal's former Tottenham striker Roberto Soldado has been talking about Thursday's Europa League semi-final first leg against Liverpool.

"It would be a very big achievement for Villarreal to get through to the final. It's what we're all dreaming about," he said.

"We strongly believe in our chances, although we know it's going to be difficult. 

"This excitement must help us to play to our top level. We shouldn't feel any pressure but go out there and enjoy the moment that we're going to live together, players and fans alike."

Villarreal manager Marcelino insists his side are more than equal to Europa League favourites Liverpool and hopes the visitors "suffer" at El Madrigal in their semi-final first leg on Thursday. 

"Liverpool might be the favourite - the club, their history and the fact that they knocked out Borussia Dortmund all add up - but we don't consider ourselves to be less than them," he said.

"We are going to give everything from our side to eliminate this legendary team. 

"We don't have any pressure on us. I'm really satisfied with and grateful to this squad for getting to this semi-final."

British Cycling chief executive Ian Drake on Shane Sutton's resignation as technical director: "I understand and respect Shane’s decision to stand down. His primary focus has always been the athletes, and this decision is something he has taken to allow them to focus on their preparation for Rio.

"Andy Harrison, programmes director at British Cycling, will be taking over with immediate effect and will manage the team in the build-up to Rio 2016.

“As we announced yesterday, we are now putting in place an independent review with UK Sport so that we can investigate the allegations that have been raised in recent days about the culture within the Great Britain Cycling Team."

British Cycling technical director Shane Sutton, who has resigned: "The developments over the past few days have clearly become a distraction. It is for this reason, and having spoken to friends and family, that I believe it is in the best interests of British Cycling for me to step down from my position as technical director.

“I have made clear that I reject the specific claims that have been made against me in recent days, and I look forward to taking a full part in the review process so I can respond to the allegations in detail.

“Cycling is my passion and I have always worked to get the very best out of professional athletes. I am proud of what British Cycling has achieved and I am excited by the potential of the team for Rio. They will always have my full support.”

Harlequins have confirmed the appointment of former England assistant Graham Rowntree as their forwards coach for next season.

Current head coach John Kingston will step up to director of rugby, with Mark Mapletoft the new head coach. 

Former England number eight Nick Easter will also move into a coaching role, mainly overseeing the defence. 

"I can't wait,” said Rowntree. “I've had an enforced step back from the game, it's been good to spend time with the family. 

"I'm delighted we won the Six Nations, but very quickly here we are. The start of a new adventure, and I can't tell you how excited I am to be at a club like this."
