"As you would expect, the Real Madrid forward was the centre of attention as Wales held an open training session on Wednesday, with hundreds of local school children cheering wildly at his every touch.

"Members of the media will have to show a little more restraint this afternoon but there is a keen sense of anticipation as we await Bale's arrival."

Will Grainger and Thornley click?published at 11:00 British Summer Time 9 June 2016

    2016 Olympics

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport

"En route to the Great Britain rowing team announcement for the Rio Olympics and it should be interesting for two reasons: double scullers Katherine Grainger and Vicky Thornley.

"Grainger is chasing a fifth Olympic medal in Rio which would make her the most decorated British female Olympian, but there is a chance her dream could end in tatters.

"The 40-year-old quit the sport after winning gold with Anna Watkins in London but returned for a final swan song in Brazil. Unfortunately, her new partnership with Thornley, 28, just has not clicked.

"That led to an attempt to shoehorn the pair into an improving women's eights boat, but on Wednesday GB Rowing said after recent testing the pair did not match up to the eight crew. So the question now is: where do they go from here? Back into the women's sculls, or does one drop out? Do both drop out?

"The boat has already been qualified for Rio but after the duo finished fourth in May's European Championships, an Olympic medal looks a long way off. Something needs to change and today we might find out what that is."

McGinn frustration at formationpublished at 10:51 British Summer Time 9 June 2016

    Euro 2016

    Lyle Jackson
    BBC Sport NI in France

Northern Ireland’s Niall McGinn is rather enjoying all the attention of being a player at Euro 2016. He has had messages from his GAA club Donaghmore, and the team he played for in the Irish League, Dungannon Swifts.

“I’m the only Aberdeen player here, so the local papers in Scotland have been giving me a lot of coverage," he says.

McGinn admits Michael O’Neill’s preferred 3-5-2 set-up isn’t ideal for him personally.

“It’s frustrating for myself, the formation we are playing with no wingers. But I will always be ready to come on and play a part if needed.”

England v Russia (Saturday, 20:00 BST)

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer in France

"When Saturday comes it will all be about Russia in Marseille as far as England and manager Roy Hodgson are concerned - not a stuffed lion.

"Goalkeeper Joe Hart will be speaking today at their opulent media base tucked away outside the centre of Chantilly and it is all a bit phoney war for every team as we wait for Euro 2016 to kick-off.

"England have been in relaxed mood and striker Daniel Sturridge says the squad are trying to foster a "family" atmosphere. You can sense among the players, however that they just can't wait for the talking to stop and the tournament to start now. Not long to wait."

Incredible scenes. We have our first video sent to us about a new chant. It comes from an artist by the name of Mr Peanut Butter, who is a big fan of former Chelsea and Newcastle striker Demba Ba.

Unfortunately we won't probably get to hear it at the Euros as Senegal international Ba is not exactly going to feature.

But still, the bar has been set. Can you do better? Tweet us using #bbcsportsday.
