    Football

In an exclusive interview, former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has told BBC Sport that he thinks Jose Mourinho was right to go with "his own man" - long-time assistant Rui Faria - over Ryan Giggs.

Former Chelsea boss Mourinho, who took over from Louis van Gaal in May, has worked with Faria in his six previous managerial jobs.

"You have got to have, in your assistant, someone you have trusted all your life," said Ferguson. "If Jose hadn't had an assistant, I know he would have taken Ryan."

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says Ryan Giggs must "be himself" and make sure he picks the right club to join, after ending a 29-year stay at United last week.

"I think he is ready to manage and he has a lot of quality," Ferguson tells BBC Sport in an exclusive interview.

"He doesn't want to spoil that quality by going to a club where it is sacking a manager every two minutes."

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Having spent the best part of 13 years attending Sir Alex Ferguson’s media briefings, one thing I could have guaranteed this morning was that he wouldn’t be late.

    So it transpired.

Ferguson was there before the cameraman and after a chat and a coffee was in relaxed mood as he chatted about Ryan Giggs, his career and what the future holds now for the player who shared all 13 Premier League titles with the Scot.

To most, Ferguson is a firebrand, quick to lose his temper and go on the attack.

Away from the pressures of management, he is totally different, has opinions on everything and retains a mischievous humour, as my colleague – who wasn’t actually late - found out “what time do you call this? If you are late again you will never work again”.
