    Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has been injured while surfing on holiday in Bali following England's Euro 2016 exit, according to reports.

    The Sun reports, external pictures have emerged claiming to show the 26-year-old defender on a drip in hospital with his head bandaged and in a brace.  

    "It is claimed the centre-back suffered a heavy fall while taking surfing lessons during his escape to the idyllic Far Eastern destination – and he may even have been stung by a jelly fish," adds the report.

    Germany international Gundogan will miss the start of the new Premier League season due to a knee injury, which also ruled him out of Euro 2016.

    In June, the 25-year-old became Pep Guardiola's first signing as City manager, for a fee reported to be in the region of £20m.

    Britain's Mark Cavendish is looking to move joint second on the all-time list of most Tour stage wins, when stage three of the Tour de France gets underway at around 10:55 BST.

    The route will take the peloton a distance of 223.5km from Granville to Angers.

    Victory in Angers would take Cavendish level with French legend Bernard Hinault on 28, with just Eddy Merckx of Belgium ahead on 34.

    The great and good of Great Britain's Olympic sailing team are gathering in central London to speak to media ahead of the Rio Games, which are only 32 days away.

    They'll be hoping to match or surpass the five medals won at London 2012, but they will be without Sir Ben Ainslie, who won the only gold four years ago and has since retired from Olympic sailing. 

    So who will step up this time?

    Six-time champion jockey Kieren Fallon has announced his retirement at the age of 51. Fallon, who counts 16 British Classic winners on his record, only returned to European action at the start of this season after striking up a relationship with Curragh trainer Michael O'Callaghan. 

    The rider had a fall on the gallops last week and O'Callaghan reports the incident to have helped Fallon come to his decision to bow out. 

    "He had a fall on the gallops last week and he just said he's 51 now and doesn't bounce like he used to," he said.

    American sprinter Justin Gatlin ran the fastest 100m time of the year at the US Olympic trials for Rio 2016.

    The 2012 bronze medallist, 34, finished in 9.80 seconds, beating 20-year-old Trayvon Bromell who qualified for his first Olympics.

    World champion Allyson Felix also set the year's fastest time in the women's 400m.

    The 30-year-old, who won 200m gold in London, finished in 49.68secs despite still recovering from an ankle injury.

    Japan's Hideki Matsuyama becomes the latest top-20 ranked golfer to withdraw from the Olympics because of concerns about the Zika virus.

    The 24-year-old, ranked 16th in the world, says he often has strong reactions to insect bites.

    "I cannot be 100% sure about my safety from the Zika virus," he said.
