Dictionary of Football: Actually a bit surprised about Rooney's decision. At 32 (in 2018) he's not past his best at all. Could have been a modern day great.

Steve Reddish: A fitting way to end a brilliant int'l career. Will retire with record goals and caps. A true England legend.

Rick Aspinall: The insistence on finding a place in the England team for Rooney is holding us back. He should quit now if he cares.

Tony Baker: Wayne Rooney contributes nothing to England and should go now....he's got no quality left, not a leader ONLY has experience.

'No release clause for Hart'published at 13:58

    Football

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

I am hearing there will be no release clause in Joe Hart’s loan deal with Torino from Manchester City.

It means even if Pep Guardiola suffers a long-term injury to Claudio Bravo or Willy Caballero, he won’t be able to get Hart back.

Not that Guardiola is likely to be too bothered given he already has England Under-21 keeper Angus Gunn on his books.

Meanwhile, Eliaquim Mangala, who has been frozen out of the first-team squad at City by new manager Pep Guardiola, is interesting a number of clubs.

Mangala’s former club Porto, who sold the defender to City for £32m two years ago, are one of the clubs keen on him, although the 25-year-old does have other options.

RJH: We need to be thinking about 2020, not 2018. Bedding in a new captain now would be preferable, the problem is finding one.

Dave W: Rooney is deluded if he thinks he will be worth a place in the team for the next two years. A non-playing captain then?
