England captain Wayne Rooney on when he might retire from international football: "Come Russia, I feel that that would be time for me to say goodbye to international football. Obviously it is up to Sam, but if that is where my England career comes to an end, it will be after some highs and some lows but as an immensely proud man."

    Now it's Lee Westwood's turn...

Clarke says of his "best friend": He's going to bring everything. Lee and I had a very successful partnership as players and I have selected him because he brings something that no-one else has. He will be the general - everything he says, everybody sits up and listens."

Westwood said: "I'm incredibly proud. When I look back over my career, the Ryder Cup has provided most of the very special moments.

"Myself and Darren are very close and I was very relieved and thrilled to get the pick.

Europe Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke: "Narrowing it down to those three wildcards has been a very difficult process, but I said that I was going to look to experience and with Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer I had two former world number ones.

"The last was very difficult. Graeme McDowell and Luke Donald had an argument with their experience to join that, but they would admit that they have not been on top of their game.

"It came down to Thomas Pieters and Russell Knox and the phonecall to Russell was one of the hardest I have ever had to make.

"But, given his form, I found it impossible to leave Thomas out."
