Marcus Rashford went close but Wayne Rooney remains England's youngest goalscorer. He netted against Macedonia aged 17 years and 317 days. He now has 53 goals, that's more than anyone, ever.

How many more can he get now?

  5. Rooney's strugglespublished at 19:05 British Summer Time 10 October 2016

Slovenia v England (Tuesday, 19:45 BST)

Wayne Rooney admits his game is in "a difficult period" as a result of being on the bench for Manchester United but vows to keep on doing the right things to attempt to get things back on track.

Asked if he's surprised to be on the bench for England he says: "It's football. A time comes when you are not the first name on the team sheet. As far as I'm concerned, all I can do is keep working hard.

"I think people are entitled to their opinions but I have said many times the ones I listen to are coaches, team-mates and those close to me. People on the outside can say what I want, it's not something I'm not too fussed about."

England captain Wayne Rooney: "It's football. He (Southgate) has got 23 players to select form. I've played 13 years non-stop for England and given everything and the time comes when you are not the first name on the teamsheet.

"It is a chance for other players.

"All I can do is keep working hard and be ready for when I am needed."

  7. Rooney backs Hendersonpublished at 18:59 British Summer Time 10 October 2016

Slovenia v England (Tuesday, 19:45 BST)

Wayne Rooney backs Jordan Henderson as captain: "I'm positive. Of course I want to play but I'm in a positive frame of mind and ready to come on if needed. Hopefully we can win the game and I don't have to come on to help us win it. I understand it's a difficult decision for Gareth and respect it.

"I think Jordan is a fantastic leader. He has taken a difficult job from Steven Gerrard at Liverpool and grown into the position. He has great leadership qualities and he deserves his chance. It will be an incredibly proud moment for him and his family."

England interim manager Gareth Southgate: "It talks volumes for his (Rooney's) leadership. He was very clear from when spoke he wanted to do this.

"You can see how well he has spoken and what it means for him to captain his country. People forget those who haven't turned out for their country and focus on those who have and I don't understand that.

"I remember [former England manager] Sven Goran-Eriksson saying 'look after him (Rooney) as he is our future' and I'm not sure we have always done that."

Slovenia v England (Tuesday, 19:45 BST)

England interim manager Gareth Southgate on dropping Wayne Rooney: "It is a football decision. It's based on the opposition. On a human level it's a very difficult decision because I don't like some people getting an element of satisfaction that he's not in the team. I am probably more annoyed on that than he is because he has had to deal with that throughout his career."

On Slovenia: "I've been impressed with what I've seen of Slovenia. It's a tight group now with the way results have gone. We want to leave here top of the table."

England interim manager Gareth Southgate says Liverpool skipper  Jordan Henderson will captain England against Slovenia.

"[I've been] very impressed by him (Henderson). What stood out for me is that he had to captain a football club and take over one of the most iconic figures in English football [in Steven Gerard].

"He has got a voice, opinion and what he thinks we need to work on and good tactical mind. It was not an easy decision as there are other senior players in the squad but, because he is the captain of a big football club, it was the right decision for me."

England interim manager Gareth Southgate confirms Eric Dier will start ahead of Wayne Rooney: "I think it's clear that you are talking about two different profiles of player. Different attributes. That's the basis of the decision. As a coach you have to look at the right setup for that game. I knew with this situation that obviously the news would leak. It was pretty obvious that Eric would come into the game."

England captain Wayne Rooney on fans booing on Saturday: "To be honest I wasn't aware of it. I think football nowadays sometimes that's part of the game but I wasn't aware of it on the pitch so I have nothing to say on it."

Has playing in an attacking role at Manchester United hindered your work in midfield for England? "I think throughout my career I have played in various positions. Sometimes during games three or four positions so I am used to playing different positions at times. I don't think that has an impact at club or international level."

"Immediately, not only did he accept news with professionalism but he very keen to speak today. I wasn't sure that was a good idea but it is a great opportunity for him to talk about his pride about playing for England.

Gareth Southgate confirms Wayne Rooney will not start against Slovenia.

Southgate tells the media: "It's very straight forward. We have looked at the way Slovenia play and I knew in my mind the profile of the midfield I wanted to play in this game. In no way is it a reflection of Wayne's performance on Saturday. He had a lot of the ball, played with great tactical discipline. It's not an easy decision to take because of the respect I have for him as the captain of this team."

Just 13 months ago Wayne Rooney scored the goal which made him England's record goal scorer. Isn't it funny how football doesn't leave you sit pretty for too long.

In the blink of an eye he moved from talisman to someone who needs to play in midfield. Now it's maybe the bench.

Is this fair? Or is he England's fall guy?
