    Qualification is not even at its halfway point but Britain is already guaranteed involvement in the 2018 World Cup final in Moscow.

    The pitch that will be used for the final in the Luzhniki Stadium on 15 July has already been laid.

    Cumbria-based SIS Pitches completed the handover earlier this month.

    The surface contains 95% natural turf and 5% specially designed polyethylene yarn.

    It will be the first time a World Cup final has been played on anything but an all-natural grass surface.

    Manchester United are interested in Paul Scholes returning to the club as the under-23 team coach, according to the Daily Mail, external.

    Scholes' former team-mate Nicky Butt is in temporary charge after Warren Joyce left the job to become manager at Wigan.

    The Mail says United "will not actively pursue" Scholes but would be happy to speak to him.

    Scholes retired from United in 2013 and worked alongside Ryan Giggs when he was temporarily charge in 2014.

    Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm, who turns 33 on Friday, has hinted he may retire at the end of the season.

    The German retired from international football after winning the World Cup in 2014 and the could now walk away from the Bundesliga champions.

    He told German newspaper Bild, external (via online translation): "I would not rule out. I said nine months ago that this situation could occur and that has not changed since then.

    "The season still lasts seven months, in which much can happen. 

    "I will certainly not make my future dependent on the titles won at the end of the season, but rather feel into my body and then decide how it will continue."

    The Checkatrade Trophy has been criticised for low attendances this season, including "approximately" nine Gillingham fans making the trip to West Brom last night (see below), but today the competition has received mixed reviews. 

    Here are both sides of the argument.

    A - Nottingham Forest's academy manager Gary Brazil has said the tournament is a good bridge to first-team football for younger players.

    B - Mansfield manager Adam Murray said "I still don't agree with the principles of it and I'm not sure who it is best for" despite reaching the knockout stages.

    Olympic champions Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark have won the prestigious female World Sailor of the Year Award.

    Mills and Clark won Olympic gold in Rio in the women's 470 event in Rio improving on their silver in London.

    Four-time world champion Giles Scott, who won Finn gold at Rio 2016, was nominated for the men's award but it went to Argentina's Santiago Lange.
