The Checkatrade Trophy. It's fair to say it's not gone down too well so far. Last night saw the longest penalty shootout in the history of English football - in a game where it didn't matter who won.

Oxford had already progressed to the last 32 and Chelsea's academy team - with Kurt Zouma playing for 90 minutes - were already out following their 1-1 draw. But, as per the competition rules, the clubs embarked on an epic shootout at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea eventually won 13-12, with a total of 34 kicks being taken. Blues keeper Bradley Collins missed his first penalty and scored his second, before saving Wes Thomas' effort to pick up the bonus point.

Watching England purgatory - Butcherpublished at 08:28 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2016

England fans have had little to cheer in recent years and former captain Terry Butcher says watching the team's games is "purgatory" for supporters.

Do any England fans share his pain?

The Three Lions host Scotland at Wembley on Friday and drew 0-0 in their World Cup qualifier in Slovenia last month.

The result followed laboured wins over Malta and Slovakia as England look to bounce back from their embarrassing Euro 2016 exit against Iceland.

"We're reaching new lows all the time," ex-skipper Butcher said. "They play like they've got their headphones on."
