Luton Town chief executive Gary Sweet says the club are "staggered" by the severity of their fine for breaching Checkatrade Trophy rules (see 16:44).

He added: “We entered those teams with our eyes wide open and we accept that we would be fined for doing so. 

"While we don’t feel we should be paying ‘fees’ to get our youngsters experience, we view that as an investment in their development."

Henrik Stenson has received honorary life membership of the European Tour in recognition of his maiden major victory at the Open Championship in July.

The Race to Dubai leader received the accolade on the eve of the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, where victory will see him end the year as Europe's top golfer.

Stenson is the 51st player - and first from Sweden - to receive the accolade.

The English Football League has fined 12 clubs for rule breaches in round one of the Checkatrade Trophy.

All 12 clubs were punished for failing to field full-strength teams.

The competition's full strength policy states five of a team's starting line-up must have started the previous or following game or the starting 11 must have included five players who have made the most starting appearances during the current season. 

The teams fined are: Luton Town - £15,000 (£5,000 per match), Portsmouth - £15,000 (£5,000 per match), Bradford City - £3,000, Blackpool - £3,000, Bristol Rovers - £3,000, Milton Keynes Dons - £3,000, Millwall - £3,000, Charlton Athletic - £3,000, Peterborough United - £3,000, Sheffield United - £3,000, Southend United - £3,000, Fleetwood Town - £5,000. 

Luton, Bradford, Blackpool, MK Dons, Millwall and Southend have all progressed to the next round in the competition.

Manchester City boss Nick Cushing has warned his side not to sit back in the second leg of their Women's Champions League last-16 tie against Brondby.

The English league champions hold a 1-0 lead from the first leg, after Keira Walsh's fine individual goal gave them victory in Manchester on 9 November.

The reverse tie begins at 17:00 GMT on Wednesday with City the last remaining British side in this year's Women's Champions League, playing in their first European campaign.

"We have to dominate the ball. If we sit off and try and hold it, Brondby will beat us," Cushing told BBC Sport.

His side have already won a domestic double in 2016, having added the Continental Cup to their maiden league title.

Football coaches from black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds are still "at a disadvantage" when it comes to getting top coaching or managerial jobs, a report has found.

The study was compiled by the Sports People's Think Tank with help from Loughborough University and anti-racism group the Fare Network.

It found that only one in 25 managers, assistant managers or senior coaches was from the BAME community with minimal progress over the last two years.

"It remains disappointing to note that since the first report in 2014 the figures have changed very little," said the report.

Former Swansea, Sheffield United and Wales winger Len Allchurch has died at the age of 83.

Allchurch played more than 600 League matches in a career which started in 1950 and ended in 1971, helping the Blades gain promotion to the First Division in the 1960-61 season.

He was the younger brother of legendary Wales international Ivor Allchurch.

The winner of 11 caps, Len Allchurch was in the Wales squad at the 1958 World Cup but did not play a game.

John Higgins scored the eighth maximum 147 break of his career in the final frame of his second-round win over Sam Craigie at the inaugural Northern Ireland Open in Belfast.

Higgins, 41, defeated Craigie 4-1 to book a place in the last 16 of the tournament against China's Zhou Yuelong.

The Scot also knocked in century breaks in the opening two frames as he chases a third title in successive weeks.

"It's a dream the way the balls are going in now and I feel really confident in going for my shots," he said.

Flattery is surely an excellent way to get your new chairman on side.

Steve Evans, who has been named Mansfield manager this afternoon, has already begun paying his new chairman John Radford a few compliments.

"From knowing people in the Championship, we have a chairman who can substantiate being in the Championship," he said.

"This is a wonderful club, if you were starting out at the start of the season and picking out the top five, Mansfield would be one of them.

Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has pleaded not guilty to an FA charge of misconduct.

Shelvey was charged for allegedly abusing, in racial terms, Wolves' Romain Saiss during a game on 17 September.

The player has requested a personal hearing with the FA.

Lionel Messi will sign a new contract at Barcelona and end his career with the La Liga champions, club president Josep Maria Bartomeu is "convinced".

The Argentina international's current deal expires in the summer of 2018 and has been linked with a move, external away from the club.

But, Bartomeu said: "I believe we've got a team with incredible players, all of them. 

"There is nonetheless a leader of course, Leo Messi, he is well known and popular all over the world. 

"We're all convinced, we're all positive Leo Messi will end his sporting career in Barca."

These two have played quite a few thrillers in recent times and this one is no different.

Sir Bradley Wiggins says nothing will ruin what might be the final race of his career after a successful opening day of the Ghent Six Day event.

The five-time Olympic champion is in a share of third place with Rio silver medallist Mark Cavendish.

Wiggins, who was born in the Belgian city, had expected the exhibition event to be his professional farewell.

But after last month's London Six Day the 36-year-old hinted he could be tempted to race there again next year.

Can you imagine Manchester City lining up in red? No, me neither.

We've told you about Barcelona's new £50m shirt-sponsorship deal with e-commerce company Rakuten but, according to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, external, it could have been City signing the deal.

They say City came close to making an agreement with the company in the 2011-2012 season but turned it down for one reason - because Rakuten asked City to switch to play in red.
