Liverpool midfielder Lallana may have only lasted 25 minutes before going off injured, but in that short time he emphasised once more what a mature, developing international player he is and how important he will be to England's future.

Elegant and composed, he slid a superb pass through for Vardy to win the penalty that Lallana converted emphatically.

And while he went off shortly afterwards, his goalscoring, man of the match display in the 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over Scotland, and his match-winning goal in Slovakia, underlines that he is now a figure of real influence for England.

But it wasn't all plain sailing for Herrera on his debut last night.

England midfielder Eric Dier says the Spain midfielder caught him in the face with a "ridiculous" elbow during the draw at Wembley.

"I don't mind people kicking each other at times and stuff but that's just dirty and not needed," said Tottenham's Dier.

"He's elbowed me in the face and I just can't see why. For me, it's just ridiculous."

The pair will meet again when Manchester United play Spurs on 11 December.

Interesting news from Argentina this morning.

Lionel Messi has led the  squad in a media boycott following "grave" press reports about the team and their recent form.

The 29-year-old announced the ban after scoring in the side's 3-0 World Cup qualifier victory over Colombia.

A radio report alleged that forward Ezequiel Lavezzi smoked marijuana after a training session, which he denies.

"We've received many accusations, a lot of lack of respect and we never said anything," Messi said.

    England 2-2 Spain

    Gareth SouthgateImage source, Rex Features

What a mixed bag for Southgate and England - from the pleasure of taking a two-goal lead to the pain of its concession in the closing minutes.

Southgate will surely be delighted with how the team looked in attack, even with captain Wayne Rooney injured and striker Daniel Sturridge on the bench.

Vardy showed flashes of last season's form, while Raheem Sterling and Jesse Lingard linked up in promising fashion throughout.

The bad? The way England - much changed by that stage admittedly - rattled in those last few minutes. A few nightmares were revisited there.

    England 2-2 Spain

So as we have mentioned, England let a 2-0 lead slip in the final minutes at Wembley last night as Gareth Southgate's four-game tenure as England's interim manager ended in a draw against Spain.

Adam Lallana gave England the lead from the penalty spot before Jamie Vardy's diving header had the Three Lions in control.

But goals in the 89th and 96th minute from Iago Aspas and Isco meant Southgate's time in interim charge ended on a sour note.
