FA 'committed to addressing fixture congestion'published at 13:15 Greenwich Mean Time 16 November 2016

    Football

Plans to expand English football into five top divisions, each containing 20 teams, have fallen through today, after the request to move FA Cup dates to midweek games was rejected.

The Football Association have released a statement, which says: "The FA remains fully committed to working with the EFL and the Premier League to address the issue of fixture congestion in the professional game.

“This is why we are trialling the removal of sixth-round replays in the FA Cup this season and why we supported the EFL in consulting on its innovative ideas for reform. That commitment remains.”

The Gray brothers are likely to make up the second row for Scotland against Argentina on Saturday, two years after starting their first international together against the same opposition.

"It's hard to describe and it does make you feel lucky."

We're asking for the times your team has thrown away a certain victory or snatched an unlikely result.

Here are some more of your suggestions.

SJ McNab: Newcastle United comeback vs Norwich this season was stunning. 1-3 to 4-3 with 97th min winner. Bad for cardiac health

Mark Carter: Aug 2012, @SUFCOfficial 3-0 down to Derby at half time, pull it back to 5-5 then win on penalties. What an evening that was!

Christopher Thompson: Sunderland vs Man City. Sunderland team suffering from illness, resolutely defend for 90+ minutes. Clear a ball, Seb Larsson nearly throws up after passing the ball wide. Couple of passes later and Ji Dong Wong rounds Joe Hart for a last kick winner that nearly blew the roof off the Stadium of Light. Tremendous.

Former Australia wicketkeeper Rod Marsh has quit as the country's chairman of selectors after the team lost their fifth successive Test match.

Marsh, 69, leaves the position a day after Australia's innings defeat by South Africa in Hobart.

"It is time for some fresh thinking, just as it is for our Test team to welcome some new faces as we build for the future," Marsh said.

Captain Steve Smith described the run of defeats as "humiliating" after his team lost eight wickets for 32 runs inside 20 overs to lose the three-Test series to South Africa.

Playing Anderson a gamblepublished at 12:16 Greenwich Mean Time 16 November 2016

    Jonathan Agnew
    BBC Test Match Special

Alastair Cook confirmed that James Anderson will be considered on a pitch that looks much more inclined to take spin than Rajkot.

It's a gamble, since Anderson hasn't played since August, but there is also an argument that he could feel his way back here without the demand of a heavy workload.

Visakhapatnam has a reputation for being spinner-friendly. New Zealand were bundled out here for under 100 in a one-day match last month and Virat Kohli repeated his disappointment in the Rajkot pitch, which is sure to have been heard by ground staff here and at other venues on this tour.

Spinning wicket expected for second Testpublished at 12:11 Greenwich Mean Time 16 November 2016

Pitch in IndiaImage source, BBC Sport

England, who have won just one of their last seven Tests in Asia, impressed in drawing the first Test in Rajkot on a flat, grassy pitch which offered little help for spin bowlers.

India's spinners struggled in Rajkot but the surface for the second Test in Visakhapatnam is expected to be more spinner-friendly.

"At Rajkot I was surprised to see a grassy wicket. I definitely hope that's not the case this time around," said India captain Virat Kohli.

"It's a wicket where the spinners will find it really nice to bowl on and I expect the same going into this game."

England collapsed on a spinning track in the final Test against Bangladesh in October, losing 10 wickets for 86 runs as they fell to a 108-run defeat.

"We had two real tough conditions in Bangladesh where the pitches were as hard as I can remember," Cook said.

"When the pitch did get a bit easier in Rajkot, we showed all the hard work we'd put in. The trick is now, can we back it up here?"

England's leading wicket-taker James Anderson has recovered from a shoulder injury and is fit for Thursday's second Test against India.

His inclusion would likely mean that Chris Woakes, who has a minor knee injury, would miss out.

"It's a decision that will give me a few more grey hairs," captain Alastair Cook told BBC Test Match Special.

"He is as fit on the medical side as he has been for a while and he's better than he was in the summer.

"One thing you can't replicate without any match practice, which we haven't found him, is that match fitness."

Here is more from Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers on Steven Gerrard who announced he is leaving LA Galaxy on Tuesday.

Gerrard has been linked with a reunion with Rodgers, who he played under at Liverpool, but another option suggested for Gerrard would be to go into coaching.

Rodgers said: "[Coaching] is something I'm sure he would want to do. Back [at Liverpool], him and Kolo Toure were doing their B Licence coaching badges - I know that Kolo has just passed his, which is great for him - but they were both great warriors and players.

"I'm sure if they want to stay in the game beyond the playing side then the coaching element is something they'll look to.

"Steven certainly had those qualities, but it's what you then want to do with that, being a coach or a manager is hard work."

Controversy has hit snooker's Northern Ireland Open after Mark Allen accused Mark Joyce of trying to distract him in their first round match.

Northern Irishman Allen said Joyce was chalking his cue "right behind" him as he was taking a shot during the match.

"There's no excuse for that," said Allen.

"He did it quite a few times in the match, even after I said something, so there's no excuse for it," he added.

Allen went on to win the match 4-1.
