    Football

Former England midfielder Steven Gerrard has been linked with a move to Celtic, and a reunion with ex-boss Brendan Rodgers.

Gerrard, 36, is leaving Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy and says he has "options on and off the pitch".

Celtic manager Rodgers has been talking about his former captain and said: "Steven has been an incredible player and I had a number of years with him at Liverpool where he was absolutely brilliant for me.

"To work closely with him on the field was fantastic, he decided to go to America and I am sure he had a good spell there and will decide what he wants to do.

"I'm not sure where the speculation has coming from but news about transfers coming in will always remain inside the club."

    Cricket

Former Sri Lanka bowler Muttiah Muralitharan feels England coach Trevor Bayliss could have managed Kevin Pietersen.

Pietersen was sacked by England in 2014, following their 5-0 Ashes defeat to Australia, and was told in 2015 he was not part of England's plans by England director of cricket Andrew Strauss because "trust had eroded".

Bayliss was appointed as England coach in May 2015, taking over from Peter Moores.

'FA comments sound like Southgate's obituary'published at 10:50 Greenwich Mean Time 16 November 2016

    Football

    ProgrammeImage source, Twitter

FA chairman Greg Clarke used his notes in the matchday programme for the Spain game to express his "full gratitude" to Southgate and his staff for their efforts since taking over from Allardyce.

But his words did not please ex-England defender Danny Mills, who believes they suggested his former Middlesbrough team-mate will not be given the full-time job.

"I think it is an absolute joke. Those comments from the chairman in the programme to me say you are not getting the job," former Leeds defender Mills said on BBC Radio 5 live sport.

"Those are the comments you pick up on. Gareth has no idea what will happen next.

"He has been fantastic with the press, very open and honest, but the FA clearly have not given him an indication what happens next. I cannot believe that.

"The programme comments sound like an obituary. Gareth has clearly had no indication that he has a really good chance of getting this job."

Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez is pictured celebrating on the front page of Chile newspaper Las Ultimas Noticias.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger did not want Chile to play Sanchez in their World Cup qualifier but he did start and then scored twice in a 3-1 win over Uruguay before being substituted in the 84th minute.

The results leaves Chile fourth in the South American qualifying section. They have six more qualifying matches to come and fourth at the end of the group stage would be enough to take them to Russia 2018.

"Uruguay succumbed to the phenomenon," said the front page of the paper.

The game between two of Europe's football heavyweights on Tuesday was notable for another reason.

Video replays were used to review key refereeing decisions as part of a semi-live trial during the goalless draw.

In the second-half, Germany's Kevin Volland had the ball in the net but the goal was ruled out for a marginal offside decision.

Two assistant video referees were used to check the decision and the call for the goal not to stand was ruled to be correct.

Video replays were first used at international level during a friendly between Italy and France in September and a final decision on their use will be made by 2018.
