It has also been a weekend when moody footballers have made the headlines.

Diego Costa was left out of the Chelsea squad, amid rumours that he could be set to join a Chinese Club. Dimitri Payet has also said he wants to leave West Ham.

The Hammers are increasingly minded to sell Payet before the end of the January transfer window with Marseille keen to bring the 29-year-old back to Ligue 1, reports the Evening Standard. , external

Hammers boss Slaven Bilic initially said he would not sell the Frenchman but, according to the Standard, "the club look more favourably on the prospect" after Saturday's 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace because "there is enough quality to survive a potential Payet exit".

The Liverpool and Manchester United managers did not see eye to eye in how each team had played.

Jurgen Klopp said: "They (United) play long balls in a wild game. We played the better football and had the better plan."

United counterpart Jose Mourinho argued: "We attacked and Liverpool were the team that defended."

"They were clever," added Mourinho. "They took their time, they know how to play football and control the emotions of the game. They knew they would be in trouble in the final few minutes."

Late drama at Old Traffordpublished at 08:34 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    Football

In the second game on Sunday, Zlatan Ibrahimovic's late equaliser earned Manchester United a point they fully deserved after a typically thunderous encounter with Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Liverpool led through James Milner's 27th-minute penalty, awarded after Paul Pogba inexplicably handled a corner as he went up to challenge Dejan Lovren.

Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet was Liverpool's hero with superb first-half saves from Ibrahimovic's free-kick and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, as Jurgen Klopp's side put up stern resistance and threatened on the break.

It looked like the visitors were going to hold on and move back to second in the Premier League, but United finally forced the goal they merited when Antonio Valencia reacted first when substitute Marouane Fellaini's header came back off the post, crossing for Ibrahimovic to head home off the bar.

Toffees delightpublished at 08:16 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    Football

What a day Sunday was for Everton fans. Not even the most optimistic Toffees fan could have expected what happened as they cruised to a 4-0 win over Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.

The Toffees restricted Guardiola's side to few chances and scored with four of just six attempts at goal.

Romelu Lukaku coolly side-footed in a Kevin Mirallas cut-back and the Belgium internationals combined again after the break, Mirallas drilling Lukaku's through-ball across the keeper.

Tom Davies sent Goodison Park into raptures on just his second league start by dinking a third over Claudio Bravo and £11m debutant Ademola Lookman fired between the legs of the keeper in injury time.

We will have a lot more football chat soon, but first a quick update as to what is happening on day one of the Australian Open.

Britain's Andy Murray has won his first Grand Slam match since becoming world number one but was given a stern test against world number 95 Illya Marchenko.

A clearly frustrated Murray was far from his best but reached the second round with a 7-5 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 win over the Ukrainian.

The Scot, attempting to win his first Australian Open title after five final defeats, won in two hours 48 minutes. The 29-year-old Wimbledon champion faces Russia's Andrey Rublev next.

Another Brit, Dan Evans, is currently in action and took the first set against Facundo Bagnis of Argentina.
