Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is set to resist offers to take defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah on loan for the remainder of the season.

The Dutch defender, 19, signed a new contract in October that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2020.

Fosu-Mensah has made just six appearances this season and only four substitute appearances totalling 33 minutes since the end of September.

It is understood five clubs have expressed an interest in taking Fosu-Mensah on loan during the current transfer window.

However, Mourinho has given no indication he is willing to sanction such a move.

Karanka says he realises the gravitas the FA Cup has for English football fans.

"The FA Cup is a unique competition, and the chance to play and win the trophy at Wembley would be amazing.

"I will put out the best team I can to win the game on Saturday, as well as thinking about the two new players we have to settle in.

An unfamiliar opponent for Middlesbrough but Karanka seems confident they can avoid Cup upset.

"The best reference for us is the game Accrington played against West Ham this season. We can't take it thinking it will be easy.

"When you have a group of players like we do, you can't ask for more. They give everything on the training ground and on the pitch.

"Our style has brought us success in the past and now we are in the Premier League - we have to keep going in that style."

He says Jan Vertonghen will be out "for three or four weeks more" with an ankle injury, while Erik Lamela will be back in training tomorrow.

Earlier we brought you the news Middlesbrough are said to be in talks to sign Jese Rodriguez from Paris St-Germain on loan until the end of the season.

Speaking in his news conference, boss Aitor Karanka has confirmed their interest.

"Jese Rodriguez is a player I have worked with and I know how good he is. His next move is important and I hope we can convince him.

"No one player is more important than the team, but the offer has to be right for the club before a player will leave."

The Boro boss has also been speaking about their upcoming match against Accringotn Stanley in the FA Cup on Saturday.

"The game this weekend is as important as any other. I know how much this competition means in this country.

"The club is working well behind the scenes, and that means that I can focus on the games."

  10. Allardyce to sign 'at least two players'published at 12:36 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January 2017

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Given their present position in the Premier League’s relegation zone and having a manager who tends to be active in the transfer window, it is hardly a surprise to learn Sam Allardyce could be busy before Tuesday night’s deadline.

BBC Sport understands Allardyce expects to sign at least two players, with the possibility of even more players coming into Selhurst Park should some of Allardyce’s current squad leave.

Palace are third from bottom of the table and after drawing their first match under Allardyce, have lost four Premier League games in a row.

The Eagles have been linked with a host of players, including Sunderland defender Patrick van Aanholt and Norwich midfielder Robbie Brady.
