Is there anything more worthy of using the breaking news klaxon than Victor Moses signing a new deal at Chelsea?

OK, there probably is, but in the context of a so-far rather slow news day I'm saying it was warranted.

Madrid eyeing new keeper?published at 13:06 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2017

    Football

Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Santiago Canizares has been talking to the International Business Times., external

He believes that Los Blancos should stick with Keylor Navas rather than breaking the bank to sign Thibaut Courtois or David De Gea this summer.

However, Canizares still expects president Florentino Perez to ignore his advice and target the Chelsea or Manchester United number ones.

"I do not think that an investment of €40m (£34.2m) or €50m is justified because there is no such substantial difference between Keylor and them," he told IBTimes UK.

"But Florentino is not scared about those figures, he has proved it before. I think he still has a thorn in his side with De Gea [over his failed transfer to Real Madrid in the summer of 2015] and he's going to try to sign him."

    De GeaImage source, Getty Images

Canizares added: "De Gea and Courtois have had a bigger career path but whether they are better or worse than Keylor depends on form.

"Last year they were not better, but this year maybe they are. Many times in the big teams what really matters is the name, especially at Real Madrid.

"Florentino is exquisite in that sense, he always likes to have biggest names in the world.

"That's why I suspect that Florentino will try to sign one of those two in the summer.

"He is not scared of paying big money and is one of those who likes to get the thorns removed as it is the case with De Gea."

Golf rule changes proposedpublished at 12:35 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2017

    Golf

The R&A and United States Golf Association have announced proposals to make significant changes to the rules of golf.

It includes eliminating numerous penalties and banning caddies from lining up players.

The number of rules has been reduced from 34 to 24 in an effort to modernise and simplify the regulations which govern the sport.

Among the revisions under consideration are reducing the search time for lost balls from five minutes to three, allowing players to repair spike marks on greens and to drop a ball from any height when taking relief, rather than shoulder-height as currently stipulated.

Only three non-Chinese players will be able to be fielded in a fixture when the season starts in March, a move the country's football association hopes will combat "irrational" spending.

But the total spend for the winter window - which ran from 1 January to 28 February - was a record for the Super League, exceeding the 2016 window by £36m.

Chinese clubs spent £331m during the country's winter transfer window, outstripping the Premier League.

The country's winter window closed on Tuesday, with the 16 Chinese Super League clubs  passing the £215m spent  by England's 20 top-tier teams in January.

Oscar's move to Shanghai SIPG  for about £60m and Shanghai Shenhua's reported  £40m deal for Carlos Tevez  came days before spending caps were announced.

Limits on the number foreign players in squads are in place for the new season.
