Middlesbrough are close to breaking their transfer record by signing Nottingham Forest strikerBritt Assombalonga for £14m.

Assombalonga, 24, is currently in talks with Boro at their Rockliffe Park training ground after the two clubs agreed the broad outlines of the transfer fee.

Burnley made a bid for the Zaire-born forward earlier this summer but Middlesbrough have outbid their rivals and look set to sign a man who scored 14 goals in 33 games last season.

If the deal is finalised then the signing will eclipse the £12.7 million that Middlesbrough paid for Brazilian striker Afonso Alves in 2008.
