Having claimed a silver medal, Emily Kay tells BBC TV:

"With a couple to go, I was right at the back and I thought I'd messed it up.

"I knew it was going to be a tough sprint but it was really close on the line. I'm really happy with how I rode it."

What of Jarmila Machacova, who stormed clear and went for broke with 20 laps to go?

Well, she came 22nd and last. Maybe one to file under 'well, it seemed a good idea at the time'.

Emily Kay, on the inside, got boxed in at one point, with about three laps to go. But I thought she had a chance there.

She held her own and just launched her sprint with half a lap to go and almost managed it.

She fought all the way but she just ran out of distance.

    Cycling: Women's 10km scratch race

It is a silver medal for Great Britain's Emily Kay. She puts in a sprint for the gold medal, but world champion Kirsten Wild of the Netherlands just about holds on to add another medal to her impressive career tally.

Wild has four World Championships gold medals in her career and this is her fifth European Championships gold medal.

That silver for Kay is Great Britain's first medal of the European Championships.

It was never going to last. Jarmila Machacova is caught. Far too early.

Brave. But maybe foolish from Jarmila Machacova. The pain is already etched on her face. She has a half lap lead.

Being on your own is far from ideal, with half the distance to go. But it's a serious move this. It's only one rider but she's almost half a lap ahead now.

The five are quickly reeled in though. But wait, Jarmila Machacova of the Czech Republic goes for it and turns on the afterburners. Twenty laps to go. Gone early, very early.

We now have our first medal of the European Championships in the Velodrome. It is the 10km scratch race, with a whopping 22 entrants filling the track. It could well be carnage. Great Britain's Emily Kay and Ireland's Shannon McCurley are among those hoping for a medal.

Cycling: Women's team pursuit first round

    Sir Chris Hoy
Six-time Olympic cycling champion on BBC TV

One of the best things in a team environment is having someone like Katie Archibald. She is incredibly successful. She attacks the start. When you are the fourth rider it gives you plenty of time to get settled.

Laura Kenny is not far off the level she was. Just to have names like Kenny and Archibald - there are no weak spots. Something has to go wrong I think for Britain not to get a medal in this final.

Job done. A stunning performance from the British quartet of Elinor Barker, Laura Kenny, Neah Evans and Katie Archibald. They beat France and move into the final, where they face Italy for the gold medals.

For France, their time is not good enough to get them in the bronze medal final. Instead Germany will take on Poland for that medal.
