We'll see two contrasting techniques, Ben Proud is very flat in the water, Andriy Govorov is much more jerky and powerful.

Ben is the better starter so hopefully that can put pressure on Govorov early.

Proud, 23, won the world title in Budapest last year, but was only the second fastest qualifier in 23.01 seconds, slower than Govorov's 22.85. The Ukrainian holds the world record with a time of 22.27, set in Rome last month so will we see that time beaten now?

Raving or just warming up?published at 16:29 British Summer Time 7 August 2018

    Libby Dawes
    BBC Sport in Glasgow

I’ve popped over to the Tollcross Swimming Centre where the athletes are warming up in the pool. Coaches are barking instructions from poolside as they practice their starts.

This is an intimate venue, making it one of the best for atmosphere. To the right of me is a banked stand of seating filling up with spectators. To my left is a large screen thanking people for not smoking and reminding us to all recycle.

In front of that, five or six swimmers are flailing their arms around in some form of warm up. I’ve been trying to figure out how to best describe the move and what I’ve come up with is this... It is similar to the sort of dance people used to do in the 90’s while repeatedly blowing a whistle and wearing neon vests.

    Exactly.

'A great start to our career together'published at 16:22 British Summer Time 7 August 2018

    Diving: Women's 10m synchronised

European gold medallist Lois Toulson: "I definitely wasn't expecting that. We were just happy to come here and compete to get experience because we only starting diving together earlier this year, so to win is amazing.

"We have got a lot of potential with Eden being so young, and I'm not too old myself, so we've got a long way to go and this is a great start to our career together. I don't tend to look the scores too much but you know you can always get up there with one good dive and that' what we did.

"I always enjoy doing a competition before my individual events to get me going, so this has put me in a great place for the next few days."

Team-mate Eden Cheng added: "I'm lost for words. Lois literally calmed me down I was a nervous wreck before we dived.

"I didn't even see that we'd won after the scores came up, so Lois had to tell me, and I was so happy."

'Not always a happy ending'published at 16:16 British Summer Time 7 August 2018

    Cycling: Women's madison final

    Sir Chris Hoy
Six-time Olympic cycling champion on BBC TV

It's one thing to get the changeover perfected in training but in a race it's very different because there's all sorts of other factors - so to get it completely right first time is very difficult.

Katie Archibald was very disappointed as we saw, but the race was a very high standard.

She knows there a lot of other [GB] riders wanting to ride in the madison in Toyko - plenty of riders will want a shot. But I think when it comes down to it, these two will get picked.

It's a long road to Tokyo and we know Laura is on an upward trajectory but Katie hasn't had the best preparation with a broken collar bone earlier this year. It's reminder that it's sport because it's not always happy ending and GB can't always win everything on the track.

Kenny & Archibald regret 'mistakes'published at 16:15 British Summer Time 7 August 2018

    Cycling: Women's madison

    Libby Dawes
    BBC Sport in Glasgow

A third gold was a job too far for Laura Kenny earlier today in the women’s madison. The four-time Olympic champion and her team-mate Katie Archibald came fourth and were inches from taking the bronze medal from the Russian pair, but the pain on Kenny’s face was clearly visible, even with my dodgy eyes.

Neither riders could stand during their post-race interviews with the media.

“I couldn’t have done anymore” said an exhausted Kenny.

“We made a few mistakes and it all adds up. We wasted energy and you need all the energy we can get. I am really proud of how I’ve rode over the week and it will hopefully be an uphill slope from here."

Katie Archibald was just as self-deprecating. She said: “It’s almost a comfort, the mistakes we made because there was so much to improve on. That’s three European titles that Great Britain had that I’ve been responsible for losing, but maybe we don’t want to win now - maybe it will be better in two years' time.”
