I think at this point you've have to say these athletes are looking strong and I'm not sure what's happened to Alistair Brownlee

He was working hard to stay with them.

Fernando Alarza is flying through the field and is about to catch Brownlee.

His bronze medal is not secure.

    Uh-oh.

Alistair Brownlee looks like he has hit a wall.

Pierre Le Corre and Marten van Riel counter the Briton and there is nothing left in the tank.

That is surely gold gone as the leading pair stretch away...

Alistair Brownlee ate up five seconds on his medal rivals on the hill in the first lap. Will he attack at the same point on the second lap?

    The Briton has a dig.

Pierre Le Corre and Marten van Riel match him so far though.

The cheque might be in the post for the Frenchman and Belgian though. That little effort might catch up with them soon.

Alistair does tend to run strongly throughout the whole 10k.

You just can't separate them at the moment. Alistair will just be sitting in there and waiting to see what the Belgian athlete can do.

Alistair Brownlee has taken this run leg by the scruff.

He is front-running attempting to sap the energy out of Marten van Riel in second and France's Pierre Le Corre, a foot further back.

A straight podium shake-down between these three?

    Lap one of three done.

That's a real shame for Varga, he's been plagued by injuries since 2016.

It looks like his Achilles or calf has gone.

Brownlee looks strong and in control and there's definitely some mind games being played out there.

    Men's triathlon

    Annie Emmerson

The transition of Brownlee was smooth but he was slow coming out and he gave his rivals that bit of extra room in the first few meters of the run.

He came into transition first and seemed to lose a few seconds.

Alistair doesn't want to be playing catch-up.

He's now having to work hard uphill and you'd expect him to like it as he's done a lot of fell running in his past. He is clawing back into contention here, though.

    It's perfect conditions for running.

It is a lumpy run course and that seems to be suiting Alistair Brownlee.

The Briton has bridged the five-second gap between himself and Pierre Le Corre and Marten van Riel.

He loomed large in the rear-view mirror and then is suddenly tailgating the leading two.

Time for the fancy dress element.

Pierre Le Corre of France and Belgium's Marten van Riel are quickest through transition, leading the leading group out onto the run.

The medals will come from these nine contenders. Slovakia's Richard Varga is also up there.

I think he was just playing games with that short breakaway there.
