Miami Dolphins defensive lineman Christian Wilkins on Sky Sports: "I can't think of two better guys [Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts] to set an example. The way they carry themselves, the way they play the game. It really is impressive to see and they are great for the game right now."

It's a significant moment and it shows how far the sport has come. But if you take race out of it, they're both amazing athletes and have earned the right to be here. I'm excited to watch them compete.

Patrick Mahomes has been there before so is going to be more comfortable on that stage. What makes him so good is his ability to extend plays with his feet and escape the pocket. He's also got a great arm, goes through his reads and is able to complete passes.

But Jalen Hurts has been very calm and collected, and he's very hungry. He's got great offensive linemen around him and great coaches in terms of schemes, and he's a great talent as well.

Plenty of players dancing around and trying to stay loose during the warm-ups - this is no time to use up valuable energy as it's a long, long night for these guys.

The stadium is far from full, but the Eagles fans dominated as they cheered their side on and off the field and booed the Chiefs just as hard.

Pictured in the fetching dungarees above are Aaron and Jonie from Kansas City. They're long-term season ticket holders yet despite this being the Chiefs' third Super Bowl in four years, this is the first Aaron and Jonie have been to.

You'll understand why when you here how much they paid for their tickets... $6,000 each.

"Coming to the Super Bowl has always been on our bucket list," said Jonie.

And this group of Eagles fans have also paid a pretty penny to be at their first Super Bowl. They're all from the same family from Philly and have paid $5,000 each to be here.

This is what this game means to the American people.

Tonight will see the second biggest age gap between head coaches in Super Bowl history, with Andy Reid of the Chiefs 64 and Nick Sirianni of the Eagles 41.

The 23 years, two months, 27 days of difference is second to only Bill Belichick and Sean McVay's 33 years, nine months, 8 days from Super Bowl LIII.

Reid has been a head coach for 24 seasons in the NFL - this is just Sirianni's second in the top job!

  7. The biggest 'final' in world sport?published at 22:51 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2023

Kansas City Chiefs v Philadelphia Eagles (23:30 GMT)

Fresh from ending his fifth season in the NFL - and his first with the Washington Commanders - British defensive end Efe Obada is also out in Arizona to watch the big game. The 30-year-old caught up with the BBC this week and told us why the Super Bowl is such a big deal.

"It's such a spectacle," he said. "There's been so much activity this week, so much partying. The Super Bowl's probably the biggest 'final' in the world.

"As a competitor, it's the ultimate goal. There's been many Hall of Famers and successful players that have never won a Super Bowl.

    "Plus Rihanna's playing at half-time!!"

Keep your eyes peeled on BBC iPlayer next month as there'll be more from Nigeria-born Obada on his remarkable journey to the NFL.

  9. Big Red out in town… well, almostpublished at 22:45 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2023

Kansas City Chiefs v Philadelphia Eagles (23:30 GMT)

BBC Sport at State Farm Stadium, Arizona

There were a few fans dotted around town at the start of Super Bowl Week but things really amped up on Friday. Fans of all NFL teams, many without tickets, poured into Phoenix, plus scores of celebrities and ex-players.

Straight after arriving downtown on Friday I saw TV presenter Vernon Kay, a former London Warriors team-mate of Efe Obada, and his crew setting up for a shoot. Then within five minutes I could swear I saw Marshawn Lynch in a rickshaw and Chiefs coach Andy Reid crossing the street.

I wasn’t the only one stood wondering if it was really ‘Big Red’. It wasn’t, it turns out he’s a lookalike who’s been doing various media interviews this week and even has his own Twitter handle. It’s @AlmostAndyReid,, external obviously.

  10. Who will have the crowd?published at 22:44 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2023

Kansas City Chiefs v Philadelphia Eagles (23:30 GMT)

It's been pretty even around the Phoenix area this week between Chiefs and Eagles fans, with perhaps a few more Eagles spotted around Scottsdale at the golf at the weekend.

Philly fans are notoriously rowdy, and I can confirm that's definitely true, but Chiefs fans are a loud bunch as well so this will be interesting.

Unlike a usual NFL game with huge home crowd advantage, a Super Bowl is just wall-to-wall noise from start to finish!

The roof here at State Farm Stadium is open for kick-off, and it's been a glorious week of weather here in Arizona. Sadly it's going to rain in the Valley of the Sun tomorrow when I'm meant to be playing golf though...

Anyway, back to the game, and if the roof stays open it may have some impact on the game, mainly kicking as it has been a bit breezy here, so we'll watch out for that as we go.

Don't worry, though, I've brought a jumper as it gets chilly at night in the desert.

  13. The MVP is here...published at 22:36 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2023

Kansas City Chiefs v Philadelphia Eagles (23:30 GMT)

Patrick Mahomes is up against the stats tonight, as no reigning MVP has gone on to win the Super Bowl in the same year since Kurt Warner in 1999.

The last nine MVPs to play in the Super Bowl have all lost - and worryingly for Mahomes the last man to do so was Tom Brady, losing Super Bowl LII against, yes you guessed it, the Philadelphia Eagles.
