The deal that took Matt Stafford to Los Angeles hasn't worked out too badly for Detroit either.

Although Jared Goff led the Rams to the Super Bowl in 2019, he had fallen out of favour by 2021.

The Lions then won just three games in his first season in Detroit but, with the aid of those draft picks surrendered by the Rams, coach Dan Campbell has rebuilt the roster.

Goff once again looks an elite quarterback and the 29-year-old has spearheaded the team's transformation, improving to a 9-8 record for 2022 and a 12-5 finish this season.

The Detroit Lions signalled their intent by winning the season opener away to the defending champions, upsetting the Kansas City Chiefs 21-20.

After beating Chicago in November they had an 8-2 record, with their only losses coming at Baltimore and in overtime at home to Seattle.

Jared Goff then passed for 278 yards and five touchdowns in a 42-17 win over Denver in December and the Lions beat divisional rivals Minnesota at home and on the road to run out comfortable winners of the NFC North.

They were also the closest team to winning at Dallas, losing 20-19 at AT&T Stadium in their penultimate game of the regular season.

The Los Angeles Rams started the season without star receiver Cooper Kupp because of a hamstring injury and they went into their bye week with a 3-6 record.

But that break allowed them to regroup and since returning to action, their only defeat from their last eight games was at Baltimore. They have effectively been playing play-off football for weeks already as they had to keep winning to earn a wildcard spot, finishing second in the NFC West on 10-7.

Kupp returned to register 737 receiving yards from 12 games but rookie receiver Puka Nacua emerged as the Rams' star man this season. Only three players had more receiving yards than Nacua's 1,486.

Matt Stafford has just had plenty of boos as he ran onto his former home field on his return to Detroit. In 12 years with the Lions, the 35-year-old quarterback set franchise records for passing yards, passing touchdowns and QB wins.

However, he played in just three play-off games - all defeats on the road - so sought a trade in 2021. Stafford left for the Los Angeles Rams, who sent Jared Goff and a host of draft picks the other way.

And the move swiftly paid off as Stafford played in more play-off games in his very first season in LA than he did in his entire Lions career, leading the Rams to Super Bowl victory in their own stadium.

"I understand what the people of Detroit and the city of Detroit meant to me and my family," said Stafford this week.

"I hope they feel that back, but at the same time I'm not a stranger to the situation and understand that I'm the bad guy coming to town."

Right, that was a stunner of a result in Dallas, and now we've got another huge play-off game.

The Detroit Lions won their first division title since 1993 this year, when they won the now defunct NFC Central - and the 30-year drought is the third-longest in NFL history.

Finally Lions fans can watch their side host a play-off game again, only four of the current Lions squad were alive the last time it happened.

Detroit fans haven't had a lot to shout about - they've won just one play-off game since 1957!

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love: "We were really loose. We came here with the mindset that we would dominate. A lot of people didn't think of us but we didn't care about that.

"We knew the opportunity we had in front of us and we made the most of it tonight.

"They have a good defence but I think we've got a really good offence as well. The run game was excellent, Aaron Jones played a great game, o-line was excellent. It was a real team effort.

"It's another tough road game [next] against the 49ers."

During my RAF days I was in a bar in San Diego 1998 and literally bumped into a guy, after apologising I asked if he was here for the Super Bowl and he just smiled and said “yes”. I asked him which team he liked “Green Bay” with a bigger smile on his face. Wish him well and back to the bar. Four days later in a bar in Bermuda (travelling a lot with Harrier 4Sqn) we’re watching the Super Bowl in TV and up pops this guy I bumped into… someone called Brett Favre. They went on to lose and my buddy blamed me for blanking him! If you’re reading this, sorry Brett!

Jordan Love is so relaxed when he throws, he jumps a little bit. He learnt that from Aaron Rodgers and that served him well.

  11. Perfection from the Packerspublished at 01:01 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

Hats off to the Packers and Jordan Love in particular, who threw for 272 yards and three touchdowns - with crucially no turnovers.

Aaron Jones rushed for 118 yards and a hat-trick of TDs and Romeo Doubs had 151 receiving yards and a score - the best game of his young career.

It's seven wins in nine for the Packers with Love throwing 21 TDs and just one interception in that span - Green Bay are hot at the right time.

San Francisco - you have been warned!

Really something, I was very impressed by Jordan Love and the Packers defence.

They're going to have to be great next week against San Francisco.

  13. On to San Franciscopublished at 00:56 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

After that stunning success, the Green Bay Packers will now travel to San Francisco to face the top-seeded 49ers in the next round.

It'll be another tough road assignment, but we thought that three hours or so ago and Jordan Love passed that test with flying colours.

And remember, the Niners are the team that regularly stopped Aaron Rodgers from getting to a second Super Bowl with the Packers over the last few years.

Can Love get the better of them?

  14. Full-time - Packers run riotpublished at 00:52 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

Green Bay Packers 48-32 Dallas Cowboys

And it's all over - the scoreline makes it look like a ding-dong slugfest, but it was a one-sided beatdown by the Packers and it's yet another play-off disappointment for the Dallas Cowboys.

The seventh seed, the youngest squad in the NFL, has come into the second seed on a 16-game home winning run and just taken them to the cleaners.

What a performance by Green Bay.

Dak Prescott goes down and it takes an age to get back up and set up for a Hail Mary on their final play.

  17. Close!published at 00:48 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

Green Bay Packers 48-32 Dallas Cowboys

Dak Prescott just has to try and left it fly now and try and find a couple of big chunk plays to get in range of the end zone.

And he does get them up to the 30-yard line before hanging a high ball up to CeeDee Lamb in the end zone, who almost takes a one-handed stunner but just can't hang on.

  18. Two-minute warningpublished at 00:43 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

Green Bay Packers 48-32 Dallas Cowboys

Can Dallas give us a grandstand finish? They'll need a quick score here after the two-minute warning, but if they can find the end zone again then, and get a two-point conversion, then there'll suddenly be huge pressure on the onside kick.

    Might just be wishful thinking...

Matt LaFleur is taking no chances as he's put Jordan Love and Aaron Jones back in the game after Dallas got another score.

The Packers don't want anything silly to start happening here so need their top guys to see this game out.
