    Makwala out

    Pam Venning:

"We had to use the assumption that if he has the same symptoms as the people who have been confirmed as having norovirus, then he is contagious and a risk to other athletes.

"We have communicated with all of the teams. I was phoned immediately and we contacted the team leader.

"Our decision is to protect all the athletes across the championships."

  6. Van Niekerk takes goldpublished at 22:14 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

    Men's 400m final

Had it in the bag, eased down, gold in the bank.

Wayde van Niekerk now has two world championship gold medals, an Olympic gold medal, and a Commonwealth silver.

All at 400m. He has no 200m medals apart from in last year's African championships. That could well change on Thursday night.

The row over Isaac Makwala's exclusion from that 400m final rumbles on and on.

Wayde van Niekerk's time tonight would have seen him finish fourth in last year's Olympic final - which he won of course in a world record time.

    Men's 400m final

Wayde van Niekerk is having a lie down on the South African flag, he's ran a lot of races this week and still has the 200m to come.

Wayde van Niekerk starts to tie up at the end and it's only 43.98 seconds but he won't be concerned about that because he came here for the double and the first half of that is now complete.

    Wayde van Niekerk

Only Wayde van Niekerk can switch off and jog over the line to win the 400m. Each round we've seen him we've not seen him hit the pedal. He's trying to conserve energy for the 200m.

    Men's pole vault final

Some great camaraderie between the pole vault competitors tonight, I must say. They've been chatting all night and were standing together to watch that 400m final.

Now Renaud Lavillenie has to clear 6.01m.

It's his last chance. He'll go from bronze to gold if he does...

Nowhere near that time. He's out.

Wayde van Niekerk is the third man after Michael Johnson and Jeremy Wariner to win men's 400m at consecutive world championships. Good company.

Wayde van Niekerk can run faster than that, maybe doubling up is hurting him a bit, but he was dominant and wins his second world title.

Steven Gardiner has silver with Abdalelah Haroun taking bronze for Qatar.
