British Athletics need to look at how they put pressure on the athletes as "medal prospects".

We have to look at probable medallists rather than potential ones.

Many other nations were looking at Great Britain and suggesting maybe they could get two medals but the national body said seven to eight medals.

We put too much pressure on these athletes who look at the field in front of them and think, "actually I don't think I can beat these people".

Jackie Brock-Doyle, IAAF spokeswoman: “It’s a sad case but we have to follow process for the health and well-being of all athletes.

"All processes have been followed, clear statements released and very clear guidelines issued to team managers and doctors on Sunday. The Botswana team turned up for briefings.

"We can’t go into details of athletes’ conditions, it’s better the statements and Public Health England statement stand.”

In athletics - a World Championships are genuinely a global championships - there are 200 nations here so it's the best in the world here.

There aren't many sports who can actually say they are globally competitive.

  4. Funding under threat?published at 19:00 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

British athletes are underperforming at the World Championships because of issues with their mentality, says ex-Olympic champion Darren Campbell.

UK Sport's target is between six and eight medals but, after five days of competition, Britain have one - Mo Farah's gold in Friday's 10,000m.

While Campbell believes there is "hope" for the future, he told BBC Radio 5 live: "Clearly there's something wrong.

"We can't pretend it's not happening. If medals are not won, funding is cut."

There was uncertainty for most of today as to whether Isaac Makwala would be able to race tonight. The fact is that it is not up to the athlete, and the IAAF have pulled him out.

    Here's the rule:

    RULE 113

'the Medical Delegate shall have ultimate authority on all medical matters. He shall ensure that adequate facilities for medical examination, treatment and emergency care will be available at the site of the competition and that medical attention can be provided where athletes are accommodated.'

Dr Malcolm Harvey: The IAAF are an absolute joke of an organisation. The World Championships and the (lack of) information have been shambolic.

Alex Haworth: These championships have been embarrassing for the sport.

Geoff Auckland: It takes 48-72 hours to get a novovirus result during which time suspects should be isolated - standard medical advice!

The first event in the stadium tonight is the women's javelin final.

If recent history in the capital – plus the 2017 world rankings – comes to pass this could be a contest between two women with three Olympic titles: Croatia’s fresh-faced Rio winner Sara Kolak and Czech Republic’s Barbora Spotakova.

The IAAF may soon realise they have got this horribly wrong as to why they have chosen to disqualify him.

Does this apply to other athletes? If you collapse you are okay but if you vomit you aren't okay?

Has he been advised not to be around other athletes?

There is a lot of inconsistency here.

And then of course, there is the elephant in the room - Wayde van Niekerk is an IAAF favourite and now his only challenger has been pulled out of both the 200m and 400m? The conspiracy theories will come out of the silence.

  10. Going viralpublished at 18:48 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

and not in a 'good' way

All is not well in London. Let's clear up what is going on.

Athletes staying at one of the team hotels for the World Championships have fallen victim to a suspected outbreak of norovirus.

Public Health England says 30 athletes and support staff have been affected, with two cases confirmed as the bug.

Botswana's leading 400m contender Isaac Makwala had to pull out of the 200m last night and now tonight's 400 final, while German and Canadian athletes staying at the Tower Hotel fell ill last week.

A further 30 Germans due to arrive on Tuesday will be moved to other hotels.

The IAAF haven't done themselves any favours by not telling us exactly why Isaac Makwala is not able to compete. He is devastated, he was trying to win the 200m and 400m and he's been pulled out of both races when he says that he is fit.

There are rumours trackside that Makwala may turn up tonight and try and get in. It's an odd situation which is only going to develop.

These kids at Herne Hill Harriers were treated to an athletics masterclass from Team GB sprinter Nigel Levine during their Star Track holiday club - part of Team Personal Best, external, the scheme to get people active around London 2017.

Great to see Nigel looking so fit and well, after the motorbike crash earlier this year that nearly killed him and fellow sprinter James Ellington. We hope to see him back in his spikes soon...

There are people at the top of that. Hanging from a small row of metal seats. Upside down.

I'm sure the view is very nice and you probably get a lovely birds-eye view of the London Stadium while you're at it, but nope, not for me. Nor the hundreds of people on Bridge One gasping every time it swings back into action.

"It would be devastating," said Makwala on the prospect of missing out.
