Asa Tribe in his way to a century for GlamorganImage source, Rex Features

A first day of the season using the Kookaburra ball which must have struck fear into the hearts of the bowlers but the batters haven't had it all their own way.

Surrey managed to bowl out Worcestershire while Jack Morley grabbed 6-55 for Derbyshire at Gloucestershire.

James Coles and Tom Kohler-Cadmore were centurions in Division One and Asa Tribe continued added to his burgeoning reputation with a maiden first-class century for Glamorgan as Joe Cracknell did likewise for Middlesex.

Oh, and Jofra Archer returned after four years away from the county game with a tidy little batting cameo too.

It's bubbling up nicely - you can read all the day's news here and we'll be back tomorrow from 10:30.

They lost a few overs for morning rain in Bristol, but Jack Morley still managed 6-55 as the home side were bundled out for 187. In reply Gloucestershire took two evening wickets, but Derbyshire still happily on top at 116-2.

Dane Vilas has had an instant impact on his Middlesex side who were bailed out by Joe Cracknell's 106* and Luke Holman's 51 to go from 33-3 to 397-8, a decent score against any ball. Liam Guthrie's 6-87 was clearly exceptional, he just lacked help from the rest of the Northants attack.

Blackpoolians had the rare chance to see new temporary skipper Sir Jimmy Anderson bowl at their club ground today, but Lancashire's match with Kent was curtailed due to heavy afternoon rain. Ben Compton will resume 86* tomorrow with Kent 213-3.

It is right in the balance after day one at Grace Road, 21-year-old Jersey international Asa Tribe notching his maiden first-class century as Glamorgan finished 305-5 v Leicestershire.

Jofra Archer coming out to bat for SussexImage source, PA Media

Jofra Archer returned to County Cricket for the first time since 2021 but played a role with bat rather than ball as he chipped in with 31 to support centurion James Coles as Sussex reached 322-9 at Durham.

The defending champions Surrey are in control against Worcestershire as they dismissed the home side for 209 before closing on 47 without loss in reply.

Ben Slater was out four runs short of a century but the leaders Nottinghamshire are 298-6 and going well at against Yorkshire at Trent Bridge.

It rained runs at Edgbaston as Tom Kohler-Cadmore blasted a century and shared a 186-run opening stand in partnership with Josh Davey with Somerset 327-3 against Warwickshire.

Charlie Allison made a second first-class century for struggling Essex to help them to 292-8 against Hampshire at Chelmsford.

  5. Close of play at Edgbastonpublished at 18:53 British Summer Time 22 June

    Warwickshire v Somerset 327-3

Seven balls were remaining but the rain has just started to fall so that is that for day one here.

Somerset and the kookaburra ball have dominated.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore (104) and Josh Davey (64) with the highest first-class opening partnership for Somerset since Marcus Trescothick and Tom Abell put on 272 against Hampshire at Taunton in September 2015.

Tom Lammonby finishes 75* and Abell himself 20*.

  6. 50 runs

50 partnershippublished at 18:45 British Summer Time 22 June

    Warwickshire v Somerset 326-3

Only one of the four partnerships has not reached 50 and that was because Tom Kohler-Cadmore fell just a run after his 186-run partner Josh Davey did. Like they could not score runs without each other today.

Tom Abell is in no hurry on 18* off 41 balls, frustrating Warwickshire who are setting some odd fields.

Tom Lammonby is oozing class on 75* off 124 balls now with 2.3 overs remaining.

  7. Close of play in Bristolpublished at 18:44 British Summer Time 22 June

    Gloucestershire 187 v Derbyshire 116-2

    Derbyshire's day in Bristol.

Jack Morley took 6-55 to help dismiss Gloucestershire for 187 as James Bracey (47) and Cameron Bancroft (58) were given precious little support from elsewhere.

In reply, Derbyshire - second in Division Two - gave themselves a decent chance of closing the gap on leaders Leicestershire by reaching 116-2 at stumps.

  8. Lammonby to ton up before close?published at 18:39 British Summer Time 22 June

    Warwickshire v Somerset 322-3

Tom Lammonby (74*) could get to a century before close here... 4.2 overs remaining.

Another sumptuous cover drive, this time off Ollie Hannon-Dalby, fairly races away to the boundary, the new ball travelling faster away of course.

Deep cover goes out which is a pretty defensive move with the ninth ball with a new cherry.

If you did not already realise, Warwickshire, and almost the entire County Championship don't rate these Kookaburra balls to bowl with...

  9. Postpublished at 18:31 British Summer Time 22 June

    Gloucestershire 187 v Derbyshire 114-2

Gloucestershire have taken a second wicket of the evening - Derbyshire opener David Lloyd caught for 35.

But the visitors are still well on course to take complete control at Bristol after their fine effort with the ball.

  10. new ball

New ballpublished at 18:31 British Summer Time 22 June

    Warwickshire v Somerset 313-3

    Ethan Bamber to take it.

Remember 10 overs were lost through that small shower just after noon today, thus only 86 overs to be bowled.

The floodlights have been on for a while here with grey cloud overhead, but there should be no threat of bad light really, these six overs should be played with seam bowling allowed too.

  11. 300 runs

300 and a second batting point for Somersetpublished at 18:23 British Summer Time 22 June

    Warwickshire v Somerset 303-3

Tom Abell has been under some criticism to be replaced by his current partner Tom Lammonby in the T20 Blast team, but (albeit a different format) that shot there could be a sign of him showing his best hereonin.

A sublime cover drive as Che Simmons over-pitches outside off stump, some way to get a second point!

  12. Close of play at Trent Bridgepublished at 18:22 British Summer Time 22 June

    Notts 298-6 v Yorks

After just 94 of the allocated 96 overs, the umpires decide enough is enough and call the ground staff on with clouds gathering.

Ishan Kishan is 44 not out, while Liam Patterson-White has 10.

League-leaders Nottinghamshire will feel they are just about on top on a used pitch, but quick wickets in the morning bring Yorkshire right back into it.

  13. Close of play at the Riversidepublished at 18:16 British Summer Time 22 June

    Durham v Sussex 322-9

Sussex's James Coles celebrates his centuryImage source, PA Media

James Coles made a fine century but even he will accept he has probably played second fiddle to the welcome return of England's Jofra Archer to first-class cricket after four years away.

Coles was dropped twice before going to a fifth championship century and his first away from Hove.

Archer was made to wait a further 10 minutes for his return as the umpires took the players off with rain threatening as he headed out to bat.

When he did get to play, the England paceman shared a 50-run partnership with Coles for the ninth wicket, contributing 31 of those runs himself.

Bas de Leede (4-83) was the pick of the bowling for the home side.

  14. Close of play at New Roadpublished at 18:16 British Summer Time 22 June

    Worcs 209 v Surrey 47-0

Surrey's day as they dominate with bat and ball.

Worcestershire elected to bat after winning the toss but only Matthew Waite (68) really got to grips with the strong Surrey attack as they were dismissed for 209.

Matthew Fisher and Jordan Clark took three wickets apiece while the returning Nathan Smith managed one against his former club.

The defending champions then coolly reached 47-0 at the close with no scares and they are already in total control against the bottom side with their powerful batting line up surely licking their lips.

  15. 50 runs

50 for Tom Lammonbypublished at 18:14 British Summer Time 22 June

    Warwickshire v Somerset 285-3

Tom Lammonby is arguably Somerset's most reliable run scorer against the red ball now, probably just taking that mantle off Tom Abell who is now batting at number five.

It's 98 balls for his 53* as he takes four from the first ball of Che Simmons' 11th over to get there.

Nearly into single figures of overs remaining now.

  16. Close of play at Northantspublished at 18:13 British Summer Time 22 June

    Northants v Middlesex 397-8

New Middlesex head coach Dane Vilas will be delighted by his side's fightback at Northants in Division Two.

They looked in some bother at 33-3, 95-4 and even 160-6 but are virtually assured of four batting points after recovering to 397-8 by the close.

Joe Cracknell remains unbeaten on 106 while Leus du Plooy (66) and Luke Hollman (51) also contributed valuable runs.

Northants' Liam Guthrie took a fantastic 6-87 but had too little help elsewhere.

  17. Close of playpublished at 18:11 British Summer Time 22 June

    Leicestershire v Glamorgan 305-5

Early finish at Grace Road as Tom Scriven finishes with a maiden.

Hard to say who is the happier of the sides, but Asa Tribe has to be the happiest man of the 22, his maiden first-class century has set Glamorgan up with the chance to get a decent number of batting points.

But Leic' five wickets have pegged them back such that they'd do very well to reach 400 in the 14 overs they have before bonus points run out tomorrow.

  18. Close of play at Chelmsfordpublished at 18:08 British Summer Time 22 June

    Essex 292-8 v Hants

Charlie Allison of Essex raises his bat after reaching his centuryImage source, Rex Features

And that wicket is the final act of the day at Chelmsford.

Essex seemed to be on top when Simon Harmer and Charlie Allison were ticking along, but both have been removed by Hampshire in the closing stages.

    It's finely poised.

  19. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:06 British Summer Time 22 June

    Allison b Organ 101 (Essex 292-8 v Hants)

With just four deliveries left on day one, Charlie Allison throws his hands at a wide one from Felix Organ and drags it onto his stumps.

It's a soft end to a superb innings.

  20. 50 runs

50 for Ingrampublished at 18:02 British Summer Time 22 June

    Leicestershire v Glamorgan 294-5

Only 4.3 overs remaining in this one, but the South African southpaw has got a crucial 50 for his side off 101 balls.

He gets there with a lovely squirt off a wide yorker past deep third, Logan van Beek the bowler with the exasperation after that one.
