Lando Norris headed Oscar Piastri in a McLaren one-two in Friday practice at the British Grand Prix.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was an unfamiliar seventh fastest but digging down into the data from the session suggested he was on the pace as usual.

His team-mate Sergio Perez was third fastest, ahead of Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton.

Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and Mercedes’ George Russell completed the top 10.

It was an unusual session, with some teams seeming to run different programmes from normal.

The rain is a great equaller but it also gives the opportunity for other people to have a great day. But in the dry, certainly, I think it's Lando Norris versus Max Verstappen.

I think the homework Carlos Sainz is doing [on the mediums] is more relevant than going out there on a set of intermediates. But what he is doing as well, is quite risky. Last thing you want to do is damage the car.

  12. 'Difficult session to read'published at 16:56 5 July

    Andrew Benson
    BBC F1 correspondent at Silverstone

I'm finding this session really difficult to read; Nico Hulkenberg in fourth place, for example. Max Verstappen, what's he doing in seventh place? Don't know. Norris and Piastri first and second. - that I understand.

I don't think looking at the headline lap times, I don't think that's giving us much read. Maybe the race runs will give us a bit more in a minute or two.

    Just 10 minutes to go.

Max Verstappen is making his way around the track, will he go faster than than Lando Norris?

Oh dear, Lando Norris is on the mediums, he went a little wide but managed to save it.

I'll predict rain in the pit lane in the next three minutes. That's my prediction for the day.

What I'm finding interesting is quite a few people are running the soft tyre for these race trims. So you've got Sainz on the soft, Alonso on the soft and Piastri on the soft at the moment, with still some drivers to come out. You wouldn't expect that at Silverstone.
