Lando Norris put in a sensational performance to take pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix by more than 0.5 seconds on one of the shortest laps of the year.

Norris beat Ferrari's Charles Leclerc by 0.521 seconds, with McLaren's Oscar Piastri, the championship leader, a further 0.062secs behind.

Lewis Hamilton put the second Ferrari fourth, 0.090secs slower than his team-mate, and Mercedes' George Russell fifth.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen could manage only seventh place - he was caught out by yellow flags on his final run, but had been only sixth on his first lap anyway.

Norris said: "It was a good lap, that's for sure. My Q3 run one was good but I knew there were a few places where if I just got it right I could make up quite a bit more time and I did that."

McLaren's Lando Norris has been chasing the drivers' championship lead and this might be the perfect opportunity to get his third race win of the season and close down the gap to his team-mate Oscar Piastri in the standings.

The Brit has converted all of his pole positions this season into a race win so the odds are in his favour.

  4. Positive day for Ferraripublished at 16:57 British Summer Time 28 June

It was a positive day for Ferrari after the team brought a completely resigned floor to trial in Austria, their first upgrade since Bahrain in April.

It seemed to show improvements after Charles Leclerc qualified in P2 and Lewis Hamilton in P4.

The team have been struggling throughout the season and this could be a turning point for them.

  6. 'I just want to do the best I can' - Verstappenpublished at 16:49 British Summer Time 28 June

Red Bull's Max Verstappen who will start the race in seventh: "It would have been close potentially, up until the yellow flag, but that's still miles off pole you know? At the end, it's not really that painful.

"FP3 wasn't too bad, but somehow in qualifying, it just completely disappeared, there wasn't a single corner where I felt happy with the car. That is of course a big problem with qualifying.

On the race tomorrow: "It depends how you look at it right? I don't really look at the standings, I just want to do the best I can in the race weekend. Hopefully tomorrow we can at least be competitive with Ferrari or Mercedes. I don't know because with the balance that I had in quali, for sure that is not going to look great for tomorrow. We will analyse everything."

Liam Lawson must be the happiest man in Austria this evening after out qualifying Max Verstappen. What a great performance from a man who was unceremoniously booted out of the main team before having a chance to prove himself.

    Rich in Abu Dhabi

What irony that Liam Lawson in the RB has out qualified Red Bull and Verstappen at their home GP. Time for Helmut and Horner to swallow a large piece of humble pie. Well done Liam

Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson qualified sixth in Austria, his highest qualifying of the season so far.

He will start tomorrow's race one place higher than his old team-mate Max Verstappen.

The last time Lawson qualified inside the top 10 was in Monaco where he finished P9.

  9. Piastri 'not planning on finishing third'published at 16:37 British Summer Time 28 June

McLaren's Oscar Piastri, who will start third in Austria: "It's the fact that I didn't get to start [the lap], that was the problem. I had [Pierre] Gasly's spin at the last corner, so I didn't even open my second lap.

"Lando has been very quick all weekend, and it would've been a tough challenge, but I think we easily had enough pace in the car this weekend to be on the front row. Always a shame when you don't even get the chance, but we can still have a good race from there. Sometimes it's just not your day.

On tomorrow's race: "Our pace this weekend has looked very strong. The Ferrari pace looked good as well, which was a but of a surprise, but I think we've still got some opportunities tomorrow. I'm not planning on finishing third, that's for sure,"

  10. 'It's a good start to the weekend' - Leclercpublished at 16:33 British Summer Time 28 June

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc who will start the Austrian Grand Prix in second spot: "I am very pleased, It's been a long time since, I think it was Monaco the last time we started on the front row. It's been a difficult season overall but the team have kept pushing, we've brought some new parts this weekend, which for sure made a difference because if you look at the gaps, everybody is super close, it's also thanks to the team.

"I'm very happy with the lap overall. It's a good start to the weekend, now we know that we have a better car normally in the race than qualifying so I hope that we can put more pressure on the McLaren.

On half a second to Lando Norris: "Not with our car yet but we are going to work towards that but it's not to minimise Lando's job. Congrats to him, he deserves it. Tomorrow we will try to bring him a tough time."

  11. 'It was a good lap, that's for sure' - Norrispublished at 16:30 British Summer Time 28 June

McLaren's Lando Norris, who secures pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix: "It was a good lap, that's for sure. I guess it was just by little bit by little. I knew there were a few places that if I could just get it right, I still had quite a bit more time - and I did exactly that.

"I did what I planned to do and when I plan to do something and it goes right, it normally goes very, very well. Very happy, a good day and it's been a good weekend for me so far. So hopefully we can keep it up.

"It's a long season, I saviour this moment, especially because this has been some of my tougher moments in quali. So to put a lap in like today, and performance like this wekeend like I have, was pleasing for myself. But I'm excited. It's a long race tomorrow, but it's more that it's just a long season.

"I'm very happy with today, but I want to prove it to myself over and over again, and hopefully this is just the beginning of it."

On to Verstappen. It's almost symbolic of Red Bull's decline, isn't it? It's not only their circuit that they own literally, they've owned it metaphorically, as well over the last few years and to be so uncompetitive this weekend, in a season where they have fallen from their pedestal after four consecutive drivers' championships, it's almost a metaphor for decline.
