A bit of shock about Carlos Sainz but it's so fascinating that a driver can pick up on something being fundamentally wrong or broken with the car. Yesterday after FP2, both Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz were confused because they were struggling on the soft tyre. I was expecting them to find qualifying a bit difficult with that soft tyre coming into play, but they were also worried about maintaining a lap, keeping grip throughout the lap.

It's one of those situations where you look at it and go why are Ferrari doing that? Everyone else. McLaren, Red Bull, Mercedes are all sitting happily in the garage, waiting for track conditions to improve, waiting for time, to go out at the right time. Yet Ferrari have gone out on new tyres, right at the beginning of Q2, I don't get it.

Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton and Alex Albon are the top three.

All the drivers are back on track now, let's see what everyone else can do.

The track temperature is nearly 50 degrees!

Let's see what Q2 has to offer.

Both the Ferraris of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc are already out on track and are on used sets of soft tyres.

    That's Q1 done.

George Russell just about got through in the final stages of that session putting his Mercedes in P11, one place behind his team-mate Kimi Antonelli.

It's a disaster for Carlos Sainz in the Williams, that's his third consecutive qualifying where he's not made it into Q2.

So Tsunoda out, 18th place, where he'll provisionally start tomorrow. He needs to sort it out basically. He is clearly not comfortable with the car, struggling with front grip, struggling with the understeer of the car.

The who field is separated by nine tenths of a second.

Liam Lawson goes third on the soft tyres. That will give the Racing Bulls driver confidence with only a couple of minutes left of the session.

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri haven't gone out again after going first and second earlier on.

[Gabriel] Bortoleto, the rookie, he won here last year in Formula 2. A circuit that clearly he enjoys driving on. He's been the top Sauber so far this weekend.

Max Verstappen will be looking to try and upset the McLarens, he lacked a little bit compared to Lando Norris but he was very close to the pace of Oscar Piastri in FP3.

  15. Postpublished at 15:16 British Summer Time

We are yet to see a time from Oscar Piastri after he dipped his car into the gravel.

He's recovered though and has popped himself into second, three-tenths behind his team-mate Lando Norris.

  16. Everyone on the softspublished at 15:14 British Summer Time

All the drivers have opted for the soft compound tyre.

Lando Norris goes fastest by four-tenths, with Max Verstappen in second.

Just on the track length, you need about five seconds between each car to have the optimum position in terms of the air flow so you're not being compromised in any way. There's 20 cars, 20 times five is 100 seconds and the lap is only 65, so that explains why traffic is such a problem in qualifying.

Some of the drivers are now making their way round the track as they look to set their first time of the session.

Esteban Ocon tops the timesheets with a time of 1:05.745

Will one of the McLaren drivers grab pole or will Max Verstappen make it six consecutive poles here at the Red Bull Ring?

There could even be a wild card…

It's going to be a tight fight for pole.

  20. Will it be Verstappen or McLaren for pole?published at 15:06 British Summer Time

    Ben Edwards
F1 commentator on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Max Verstappen is looking for his sixth ever pole position at this Red Bull Ring. And it would be consecutive because he's been on pole here since 2021. Is he going to be able to do it? I think it's going to be a tough battle with McLaren.

It's a long time since McLaren have had a pole here. Although they've had plenty in the past, you've actually got to go back to the year 2000 [Mika Hakkinen], so 25 years since McLaren had an Austrian pole positon.
