I think Gabriel Bortoleto is absolutely right in some ways because Kimi Antonelli got so far alongside him and there wasn't enough room for two cars to get past. Bortoleto has damaged his front wing.

The excitement is building, every single balcony around Monaco is packed. I managed to chat to Andrew Shovlin from Mercedes who said that "what everyone does will be a reaction to everyone else".

  3. Virtual safety carpublished at 14:07 British Summer Time 25 May

    Lap 2/78

Cars are coming into the pits already with this cheap stop. Yuki Tsunoda in the Red Bull is one of the first to head in. Oliver Bearman looks to have issues in the Haas.

Gabriel Bortoleto was tagged by the Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli at the corner. The Brazilian drops to the back of the field. Antonelli in 14th and George Russell in 13th have each gained places.

Everyone behaved themselves very well, Lando Norris definitely took a late brake into Turn One. Most of the cars are round here completely safely.

Who knows what will happen today. Enjoy!

Lando Norris has locked up before the first corner but he safely holds the lead after Sainte Devote. That was a nervous moment, and he may have flat-spotted his medium tyres, but the McLaren man is leading.

Gabriel Bortoleto has hit the wall at Portier! The Sauber man is out of danger and an early yellow flag is cleared quickly.

    Damon Hill

Nobody knows what is going to happen, our heads have been scratched raw and so have the strategists and the drivers. We can't work out what exactly is going to happen.

Starting tyres then. Top three have gone for the medium C5 compound, Max Verstappen in fourth has opted for the C4 hard at lights out.

Liam Lawson in ninth and Yuki Tsunoda in 12th are softies - C6 for the Racing Bulls and Red Bull drivers.

  13. 'I'm quietly hopeful for a good result' - Bearmanpublished at 13:56 British Summer Time 25 May

Haas' Oliver Bearman, who will be starting from the back of the grid, told Sky Sports: "I was telling my engineer this morning that I'm a bit less depressed starting last than I would have been 12 months ago.

"On the normal one-stop strategy nothing can really happen in a race like this, but today there are definitely some opportunities, so I'm quietly hopeful for a good result."

Haas are going to be investigated after the race for releasing Oliver Bearman in an unsafe condition when the pit lane opened earlier on.

  14. Monaco strategy: Complex race aheadpublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 25 May

A sense of the potential complexity the decision to impose a mandatory minimum of two pit stops at the Monaco Grand Prix can be discerned from the fact that Pirelli’s pre-race strategy prediction document doesn’t have any predictions.

The combination of the difficultly of overtaking in Monaco and a selection of the softest tyres is going to make running the race problematic for all teams.

Ideally, the front-runners would do an old-style conventional race - run as fast as they can and build a gap to those behind. In other words, the opposite of the usual Monaco, where the pace is controlled by the leader to ensure he gets to his optimum stop lap.

But the soft tyre selection might make that impossible because the tyres won’t allow it - and being forced into an early pit stop would be a disaster because that would likely mean getting stuck behind a slower car.

Those towards the back will be tempted - early safety car or not - to get their two stops out of the way as soon as possible and run long on the hard tyre and hope a good result will come to them as others pit out of the way.

Then there’s tyre choice - Red Bull, Racing Bulls and Sauber have only one each of the hard and medium tyres, the best race compounds, so will have to use a soft at some point. McLaren, though, have two hards and one medium, so can run the entire race without touching the soft, and almost certainly will do that.

It will be a multi-dimensional race in which every single driver has the potential to affect the outcome.

  15. McLaren on toppublished at 13:51 British Summer Time 25 May

Things aren't as close in the constructors' championship, as McLaren are 132 points clear of second-placed Mercedes and 148 free of Red Bull in third.

Williams are starting to cement that fifth place following another double points weekend in Imola seven days ago. The team hold a 31-point advantage over sixth-placed Haas.

  16. Tight at the toppublished at 13:48 British Summer Time 25 May

Oscar Piastri has been the man in form at McLaren, winning four races, which has jumped him above team-mate Lando Norris and into first place in the drivers' championship. The gap between the pair is 13 points as we edge closer to lights out.

Defending champion Max Verstappen gains a place because of Lewis Hamilton's grid penalty and is 22 points adrift of Piastri after seven races.

Martin Brundle is on his grid walk on Sky Sports and the grid is overflowing with people. Michael McIntyre has already tried to persuade him to appear on The Wheel but he batted that away quickly, saying he was working in July.

Next up is model Naomi Campbell, who just as it looks like she had pied Martin off for a chat, walks back over sharpish and gives her thoughts on Formula 1 and Monaco.

  18. Can Haas bank points?published at 13:42 British Summer Time 25 May

    Esteban OconImage source, Getty Images

Haas have one car lining up in the points positions today - the same as their rival for fifth, Williams.

Admittedly, Ollie Bearman is a long way back from his team-mate Esteban Ocon, but Frenchman Ocon was another driver who put in a stellar qualifying performance to place his car eighth in Monaco with a medium-soft combo in Q3 - two spots higher than Alex Albon and three clear of Spaniard Carlos Sainz, who starts P11.

The gap has grown wider between Williams and the rest of the midfield this season but a few points for sixth-placed Haas would do nicely after a up and down campaign so far.

  20. Great qualifying for Racing Bullspublished at 13:38 British Summer Time 25 May

Racing Bulls have got both drivers starting inside the top 10 this weekend, with Isack Hadjar giving the team a further leg up with his promotion to fifth on the grid. Liam Lawson secured his best qualifying of the season and will line-up in ninth place.

Rookie Hadjar is sandwiched between four-time world champion Max Verstapen and two-time title winner Fernando Alonso at lights out and he said Racing Bulls "did a mighty job" with their Saturday performance.

The man who replaced Lawson at Red Bull, Yuki Tsunoda, was out-qualified by the rookie duo and will take his place outside the points in 12th spot.
