It wasn't pretty at all from Tom Daley. His yips over the back two and a half twister mean that he is bottom of the standings after two dives on a total of 111.30.

He can't be eliminated - all 11 divers are going through to tonight's final - but that dive might cost him a strategic position in the starting order tonight as well as crucial confidence.

"The demon-dive strikes again! Tom Daley says he's dealt with the issue that has been plaguing him since the London Olympics, but the evidence suggests otherwise this morning. His 'back 2.5 somersault, 2.5 twists' routine scored him just 37.8 - a woefully low score for a diver of his pedigree.

"There are gasps followed by murmurs in the crowd as they debate what may be wrong, but they can be safe in the knowledge that Daley is through whatever happens here this morning - he would just prefer a higher score to ensure a better starting position in the final."

Singapore's Gao Ning wins an epic seven-game encounter against England's Liam Pitchford to progress to the men's table tennis final.

Chesterfield's Pitchford had fought back to take a 3-2 lead against the top seed but Gao, who won gold in the men's doubles on Friday, drew level and took the final game with aplomb to win 4-3.

World number 12 Gao will now meet the winner of the second semi-final between compatriot Zhan Jian and India's Sharath Kamal Achanta.

"The build-up to the Commonwealth diving has been dominated by talk of Tom Daley's "demon dive" after it ruined his medal prospects at both last year's World Championships and the London World Series event earlier this year.

"Recent results suggest he has overcome the problem but we'll soon get to see the proof with our own eyes as that routine is next up for Daley."

Diving alongside Tom Daley in the 10m platform preliminaries is England team-mate Matthew Dixon (on the right in the picture above). The 14-year-old, coached by Sally Freeman at Plymouth, may be Daley's long-term successor in the English and British set-up.

He already has a national gold and is ranked ninth after the first set of dives.

"No one in England tracksuit wants to stop in the media mixed zone at the SECC. Sara Bayman, after some persuasion, does manage to say a few words. Heartbroken, crushing and shattered are used to explain the mood in the camp right now.

"So what was said in the group huddle on the court at the end? 'Everyone was saying we have got to hold our heads high for what we have achieved in these Games,' adds Sara. 'We have to let it all out now and then prepare because we have another early game tomorrow'."

Gao, ranked 12th in the world, hit four unanswered points in the opening of the fourth game, but Pitchford is creeping back into contention again.

England take off their 'keeper with four minutes remaining to try and work an advantage in terms of manpower, but it's still Australia who look the more likely and, once they break through the midfield, there are three Aussies bearing down on an empty goal. Eddie Ockenden is the man who slides the ball into the empty net, just before the final hooter sounds.

The world champions are the class of the field, making it through the entire match without conceding a penalty corner, and they will play New Zealand or India in Sunday's final.

"England got themselves back into it but used up a lot of energy and Australia were too strong in the end, with four goals from 17 chances to England's one from five," says former GB Olympic champion Sean Kerly.

  15. Badmintonpublished at 11:34 British Summer Time 2 August 2014

Huge cheers for home favourite Kirsty Gilmour, whose playing in the semi-final of the women's singles against Malaysia's Tee Jing Ji and the Scotswoman is on top in the first game, leading 19-11 with her opponent looking tired already.

  16. Netballpublished at 11:32 British Summer Time 2 August 2014

Netball expert and BBC Sport commentator Anita Navin: "Absolute disappointment and heartbreak for some of the England players. It all came down to that pressure ball when the turnover came for them at the end. It is about your mindset through 60 minutes, and keeping composed. At times some of the players just lost that and that will need to be addressed."

  17. Netballpublished at 11:31 British Summer Time 2 August 2014

Former Australia captain and BBC Commentator Kathryn Harby-Williams: "In the end it was going to be a misplaced pass or an error that turned the game. Sport is so cruel sometimes but credit to New Zealand, they kept their composure and have shown why they are one of the best in the world.

"Kadeen Corbin will remember that mistake for the rest of her life. They are the opportunities you have to make the most of. If England can't win a game like that when can they? Or can they at all?"

  18. Netballpublished at 11:31 British Summer Time 2 August 2014

England's Kadeen Corbin is sobbing into the chest of team-mate Geva Mentor while coach Anna Mayes tries to talk her down.

Her team-mates are taking a lap of appreciation of the SECC to accept the well-deseved applause.

They have played a full part in absolute thriller of a game. But that is no consolation right now. Tears streak down the face of most of the England players as they walk round shell shocked.
