Dai Greene looks to the heavens as he crosses the line. It is in exasperation rather than thanks though.

The Welshman, undercooked in training after a run of injuries, faded badly through the final 45m, finishing fifth and more than half a second down on what he needs to make the final.

BBC Sport athletics expert & twice CWG champion

"One athlete who has definitely had has his fair share of back luck and ill fortune is Dai Greene. It is so hard to come in knowing you are searching for form and not in shape.

"He has to see and work it out as he goes. Hopefully his technique will not let him down. Having missed a backlog of training he does not have that confidence to know you can turn it on that extra little bit when you need it."

Up now on the track is the men's 400m hurdles.

That Welsh defending champion Dai Greene's season's best is more than two seconds slower than his personal best tells its own story.

The 28-year-old has been hampered by a string of injuries. He goes in the third heat in the first round and even qualification from this is far from certain.

"The tough thing for England's Sarah Barrow and Tonia Couch, who perform in the women's synchronised 10m platform final at 11:40 BST this morning, is that Malaysia, Australia and Canada are all competing. Apart from China they are the best in the world. It will be very hotly contested but who knows what could happen?"

"There's an amazing atmosphere in the centre of Glasgow today. One lady tells me she's been queuing for 30 minutes just to have her photo taken next to the Commonwealth Games emblem, whilst another wondered what all the fuss was about before deciding to join in for a #Commonwelfie."

Talking of tight professional outfits, Malaysia are in action at the National Hockey Centre and most of their team are wearing bright blue thermal tights and long-sleeved tops beneath their bright blue kit.

They look a little like Morph's jazzier sidekick from afar.

Wales are their opposition and are looking for their first goal after defeats by England, Australia and Scotland.

They haven't found it yet. Still 0-0.

England women's hockey player Alex Danson, speaking to BBC One: "It was always going to be a tight match, Scotland are a very tight, professional outfit. I'm sure it was delightful to watch but it was a really tough match to be playing. We are over the moon to be through to the semi-final."

On hearing footballer Rio Ferdinand's praise for her opening goal: "That really did make me laugh, it's fantastic to generate support. That is our game - fast, athletic, skilful and brilliant to watch. To have the chance to showcase that at a venue like this is wonderful."

Earlier this morning England beat Scotland 2-1 to set up a semi-final match against New Zealand on Friday.

"It is a lot more fresh than it was yesterday inside a packed Hampden Park. It's not cold enough for gloves although Jamaica 200m sprinter Jason Livermore told BBC Sport he should have worn a jumper at the start line during his morning heat. Welcome to Glasgow."

Perhaps that is what is irking Livermore (see 11:07). Someone get the man a thermal vest and a hot toddy.

Dame Kelly Holmes, double Olympic gold medallist and president of Commonwealth Games England, speaking to BBC One:

"Performing at the Commonwealth Games put me in good stead as an athlete. For the brand new stars coming through this is that breakthrough event you want leading up to the Olympics in Rio in 2016.

"This is the only other multi-sport event outside the Olympics, and for some sports like lawn bowls and squash this is their Olympics. The energy and atmosphere here is something you don't feel at an individual world championships.

"Scotland is so passionate about sport and that has really been brought to the fore. All the venues have been brilliant and well attended, the volunteers have been engaging and the police and military involved in organising have been great too."

Something is up with Jamaica's Jason Livermore.

He was getting on the nerves of England's James Ellington in the call room and now he gives a rather enigmatic post-race interview to BBC Radio 5 live's Sonja McLauglin.

Asked what he is making of the life in the athletes' village and his general well-being he replies: "Well it can be better - things can be a little bit better for us. Can be better in a lot of sense. We have to just enjoy and give god thanks."

    The interview continues:

Sonja: What is it you are not happy with Jason?

    Jason: I can't say. I can't say.

Sonja: Can't say or won't say?

    Jason: I won't say. I won't say.

    Intriguing.

Chris Clarke joins England team-mates James Ellington and Danny Talbot in the semi-finals of the men's 200m.

Clarke finished second to Jamaican champion Rasheed Dwyer in their heat.

Northern Ireland's Leon Reid is waiting to see whether his 20.97 is good enough for a fastest loser place.

    Colin Jackson
Two-time CWG champion and BBC Sport athletics pundit

"That was a nice competitive run by James Ellington, it is hard to run so early, but he got through very well indeed. He will have watched Jamaica's Jason Livermore in 100m, and he knows his pedigree.

"To have stayed up there, with a nice tempo, while saving as much energy as possible for the semi-final is great, and the most important thing is qualification.

"But I'd like him to have just snuck a victory there, it would have made his draw in the semi final just that bit easier."

England 200m runner James Ellington, speaking to BBC One: "That clown on the outside, the Jamaican guy, he spurred me on because he was making noise in the call room. He shouldn't do that, it just makes me run faster. As long as he does that in the semi-final too though you know what I mean?"

"That was quite easy, I was a bit nervous because I was up at 06:55 and I hate early mornings. Hopefully tomorrow, after a good night's sleep, I can go a bit quicker in the semi-final."
