It is funny how different sports have different cultures.

While some sprinters bellow and eyeball their rivals, the gymnasts are a much more cordial bunch, giving the man coming off the apparatus high fives and congratulations regardless of nationality.

Each group of gymnasts are kind of on tour together, upping sticks to wander onto the next discipline when they have all had a go.

All eyes on the rings where Max Whitlock is locking his arms out rock solid before launching into a double-twisting double-tuck dismount.

It is his weakest apparatus, but that is a more-than-solid showing. In fact it increases his lead.

The judges hand him a score of 14.733, better than those of his closest rivals Dan Keatings of Scotland and fellow Englishman Nile Wilson.

    Standings after three apparatus:

    1. M Whitlock (Eng) 46.065

    2. D Keatings (Sco) 44.433

    3. N Wilson (Eng) 43.066

"Max always looks nervous and sits by himself on the side and takes himself into his own little world but that is him and how he copes with competition."

English pair Chris and Gabby Adcock have gold on their fingers after getting married last year - now they want Commonwealth gold around their necks. The couple are among the favourites in Glasgow and start their bid in fine style. They earn a 2-0 win (21-12 21-13) against Northern Ireland's Tony Murphy and Alannah Stephenson to move into the last 16.

So, just to sum up the standings in the men's individual gymnastics after the opening two rounds ... England's Max Whitlock (31.332) leads from Scotland's Daniel Keatings (30.333), with England's Nile Wilson (28.433) third. Onto the rings, which requires real strength - one to separate the men from the boys.

Scotland's players and staff have been coming to terms with the 2-1 defeat by England that sees them miss out on a semi-final place, and leaves their future funding in doubt.

Captain Linda Clement: "To be honest, it's not at the top of my mind at the moment. The funding issue is something that is likely to be dealt with behind the scenes. It's a disappointment we couldn't win today."

Coach Gordon Shepherd said: "I recognise we started a bit slowly in the game and they (England) dominated the first half, but we were much stronger in the second half of the match. I am really proud of my players, they have been absolutely fantastic."

Three-time Commonwealth gold medallist Cram is also the coach of England's Laura Weightman, who won silver in the women's 1500m on Tuesday.

"We are delighted, for Laura this has been a lot of hard work. Her family was down with a lot of friends, so there was a lot of chat until late last night but she's been out for a run already and we are starting to turn our thoughts towards Zurich and the European Championships.

"Whenever you come into a championship the plan is really just to be ready for whatever happens. We expected the two Kenyan girls to dominate but Laura is great at not being fearful.

"You always talk about that last 500m and in a slower-run race you have to go to the font if the big names don't want to. You have to make a lot of quick decisions and Laura did that really well - she stayed tough on the home straight and got herself a silver medal. There is a lot more to come from her."

Scotland's Frank Baines was the first gymnast in the leading group to take to the pommel horse but it did not go well. His bid for a medal went out the door as he lost his grip and slipped off.

He looks disgusted with himself but he's a young lad and he'll learn from it. "He's a very stylish gymnast with great technique," says the BBC's Christine Still.

"Sam Oldham is at the SSE Hydro watching the men's all-around final. He's brought his crutches with him, too. Although, I guess, that is out of necessity after he fell in the vault during the men's team event. Louis Smith is here, too. He's appeared on the big screen, but I've not been able to spot where he is seated. Stronger glasses needed."
