Despite getting cheered for every shot, things aren't looking good for Glasgow lad Kieran Merrilees.

1-0 down, he needs to win this game to stay in the best-of-three match.

But Rajiv Ouseph is consistency personified and leads 15-6. At this stage it's all looking a bit too easy for the Englishman and the badminton arena has gone a little quiet.

"Really well done from Claudia Fragapane. Two days ago she didn't manage to put the nerves at bay but now she has shown what she really is going to be. I'm a little surprised it was not higher but there were some slight wobbles."

Lauren Mitchell is quickly surpassed by fellow Australian Mary-Anne Monckton with 13.666 and Mitchell then puts in an enquiry to challenge the judges score.

That challenge is rejected, but it all may well have been an irrelevance anyway as England's Claudia Fragapane scores a 13.133 to leapfrog the defending champion into second.

England's Rebecca Downie, bidding for a third gold medal of the Games, is first to perform and the 22-year-old will be disappointed with her showing. She wobbles to a 9.833 before defending champion Lauren Mitchell of Australia raises the bar to 13.000.

Downie's compatriot Claudia Fragapane, who already has three golds to her name, is also looking for a fourth following success in the women's vault, all-around event and team competition.

Right, we've got an England-Scotland battle of the shuttlecocks. Glaswegian Kieran Merrilees, 24, is up against 27-year-old Londoner Rajiv Ouseph. Hmm, I wonder who the Glasgow crowd will be rooting for?

Ouseph isn't fazed though, as he starts the better and leads the best of three-game match 15-9 in the opener.

It's all over at Kelvingrove, where Scotland have completed a one-sided 16-8 victory over England in the men's fours.

Scotland had lost to England in the rugby sevens and the women's hockey but the Auld Enemy never threatened a repeat in the face of a dominant performance by the quartet of David Peacock, Neil Speirs, Paul Foster and Alex Marshall.

England had a slender 5-4 lead in the early stages of the contest but the Scots were simply too good thereafter, winning ten ends to England's four.

That's gold medal number two for Foster and Marshall, who also triumphed in the men's pairs, and a second disappointment of the day for England, who suffered a defeat this morning in the final of the women's pairs.

Heartbreak for England's number one female singles player Sarah Walker in the badminton as her chances of getting through to a medal match end.

She was in it all the way against Canada's Michelle Li, the pair producing some terrific badminton. But Li emerged triumphant, winning 21-18, 21-18 in 42 minutes.

A vaguely interesting stat for you - there were eight shuttles used in the entire match. I did say vaguely.
