"It's early afternoon, the T-shirt crowd are soaking up the rays yet the floodlights are shining brightly at Glasgow's National Hockey Centre.

"The half-time entertainment in the women's semi-final between South Africa and Australia involves brave Emma, who has been plucked from the crowd, climbing inside a giant inflatable wheel and attempting to get from one end of the pitch to the other. She succeeds and her reward is a cheer as loud as the ones that greeted Australia's two first-half goals. Well done, Emma."

A split decision announces the tannoy. Nervy times. But as soon as Michaela Walsh hears "in the red corner" she is bouncing with joy. She plants a smacker of a kiss on the camera lens, hugs her coach and bounds out of the ring via cloud nine.

The split decision was not that close either with two judges giving her the fight by a couple of points and the other generously calling it a draw.

Michaela Walsh used all her street-smarts to keep clear of Pinki Rani's haymakers, side-stepping, dodging and weaving while darting in a couple of shots of her own on the way out of the sidedoor.

That should be enough to take her into the final.

That was a better round from Pinki Rani as she presses forward determinedly and throws a flurry of heavy shots. None of then land clean on Michaela Walsh but she sustains a bit of damage in the midst of it all.

Rani's efforts were enough to convince one of the three judges to award the round her way. The majority were sold on Walsh's more composed style.

Fouth and final round to come.

Pinki Rani is throwing bombs, but so far Michaela Walsh has kept her chin out of range. In and out, in and out. The Northern Irishwoman's blitz raids on Rani deliver the second round on the cards. Rani will be throwing the kitchen sink as she tries to get back into the fight.

The judges were split on that first round, but two of the three were in Walsh's favour. Which seemed about right to me. She was well up apart from that one mistake.

Michaela Walsh has a good few inches height advantage on India's Pinki Rani and that suits her fleet-footed style perfectly. She dodges Rani's rushes forward and peppers her with sharp jabs.

One nervy moment for Walsh as she gets her feet tangled up and stumbles into the corner where Rani lands a heavy shot on her. She clinches and escapes.

The hum before the hurricane at the SECC. The seats are filled and air is abuzz with expectant chatter. The only thing missing is the fighters. Oh, and an ear-splitting blast of the Hawaii Five 0 theme decides the in-house DJ.

First up is Northern Ireland's Michaela Walsh, off the back of successive unanimous decisions in her first two fights, to take on India's Rani Pinki.

Daryl Selby is handed his young son Noah as he and England team-mates James Willstrop come off court victorious in their doubles quarter-final against New Zealand's Lance Beddoes and Paul Coll.

Young Noah doesn't seem that interested in a sweaty kiss off his old man, instead swivelling round to look at the cheering crowd.

In terms of team sport encounters off the top of my head, England and Scotland have met in rugby sevens and women's hockey and in both the local fans have left disappointed.

Neither of those was for gold though. The battle in the men's fours this afternoon is however. Can David Peacock, Neil Speirs, Paul Foster and Alex Marshall give Scotland a win over the Auld Enemy and a ninth gold to celebrate?

The first of 15 ends is under way on the live streams above.

A little under 20 minutes to go until the start of today's boxing programme and the first two matches on the card are box office.

In the second, England's Olympic champion Nicola Adams fights Mandy Bujold of Canada for a place in the flyweight final.

She could well meet Michaela Walsh of Northern Ireland there. Walsh fights Pinki Rani of India in the day's opener, but has her sights set on Adams and gold.

"She's the golden girl but I'm coming up and I want to be the new golden girl," said Walsh.

"I'm in for one colour and one colour only."

    Fighting words.

Australia move ahead midway through the first half thanks to a superb lifted pass from Brooke Peris that Emily Smith latches onto and smacks past Marsha Cox in the South African goal. And moments later Kellie White diverts home from close range.

It's already looking like tough going for the 11th-ranked South Africans up against the world's second-best team.

It's not to be for England's Liam Pitchford and Paul Drinkhall, as Singapore's class tells in the fourth game. Some superb returning from Gao Ning and Hu Li earns them seven match points, and although England gallantly save five, their spirited resistance is finally broken when Drinkhall sends a return long.

A 3-1 win for the top seeds, who advance to the final to take on India. England, meanwhile, will face Singapore's second pairing for bronze.

In the midst of the furore over gold for England's Jack Laugher and Chris Mears, there is one thing we should mention because you're sure to want to know how diving hero Maxim Bouchard did.

Hero because Bouchard is the man who has metal pins attached to the bone in his left arm after he suffered massive injuries when a diving board collapsed underneath him in 2010 and he fell into a cement hole.

Well, he and Ryan McCormick put in some good dives but not enough for a medal. The Canadians finished fifth.

Downie, 22, will be competing alongside compatriot and fellow Commonwealth gold medal-winner Claudia Fragapane, 16, from 14:46 BST this afternoon.

Defeat in the bronze-medal match against Northern Ireland, left Jersey's pair of Lindsey Greechan and Katie Nixon moist-eyed.

"It's probably the hardest game I've ever played," Nixon said.

"It seemed to take forever and it was close all the way. In a way I'm glad it's over, but I'm absolutely gutted."

"We thought we had everything covered and Katie had two great bowls in the last end," added Greenchan.

"But they say you need a bit of luck and in the last few ends they had a bit of luck their way and it made the difference."

Tracy-Lee Botha and Colleen Piketh of South Africa celebrate winning the Gold Medal in the Women's Pairs Final against Jamie-Lea Winch and Natalie Melmore of EnglandImage source, Getty Images

England's Natalie Melmore and Jamie-Lea Winch have been reacting to taking silver medal in the women's pair, after losing to South Africa on an extra end.

"Right now I'm not proud, I'm really gutted," said Melmore. "Obviously it's disappointing. We missed it by the smallest of margins.

"Sometimes somebody is not rooting for us up there. We are just going to come back for more next time."

Winch added: "Right now we are both disappointed. It was a close game. Every end counted. I'm sure we will be pleased with a medal but now we are disappointed."

Is this the start of a glorious comeback? England's Liam Pitchford and Paul Drinkhall go for broke and it works for them, with some ferocious hitting earning them an 11-3 win in the third game. They're now just 2-1 in arrears, and suddenly the Singapore coach has a worried look on his face. Remember, it's best of five.

A mild bout of cabin fever at the Scotstoun Campus.

English pair Daryl Selby and James Willstrop and their New Zealand opposition Lance Beddoes and Paul Coll are level at a game apiece and things are getting tetchy in their glass cube with the scoreline so tight.

Some questionable let calls, a few shoulder barges only just the right side of accidental and it is warming up nicely.

Another gutsy effort from the English duo, but Gao Ning and Hu Li of Singapore take the second game 11-9. Liam Pitchford and Paul Drinkhall brilliantly save three game points to force the Singaporeans into a time-out, but it proves an inspired call as the top seeds clinch the game on the resumption. They're now just one game away from the final.
