Jack Laugher and Chris Mears open up with a solid dive and they, along with the Australian and Canadian pairs, have pulled clear of the bottom half of the field.

Standings after the first round of dives:

    1. Mitcham/Nel (Aus) 52.20

    2. Bouchard/McCormick (Can) 51.60

    3. Laugher/Mears (Eng) 51.60

First to walk the plank are Canada's Maxim Bouchard and team-mate Riley McCormick.

They are off the mark with a score of 51.60. Whatever the result Bouchard will be able to keep it in perspective.

In March 2010 he was practising for a diving show in Philippines when the 7m platform he was on collapsed and he fell into a 3m cement hole next to the pool. He suffered a broken arm [humerus], a broken wrist, a broken back, broken legs and head injuries.

He required a metal plate in his arm with 11 metal screws, and a screw in his wrist. It took him a year to recover from his injuries and he only made his return to competitive diving in September 2011.

    Leon Taylor
BBC Sport diving expert & CWG silver medallist

"England's Jack Laugher was the man to beat in the men's 3m springboard final after winning gold in the 1m springboard, but he made a mistake on his fifth dive that cost him the gold.

"His overall performance was exceptional but his fifth-round dive, the forward four and a half, got away from him and he went over.

"He now has one silver and one gold and will be looking to make amends with Chris Meares today. He said they are going to rip it up, they have backed themselves but the Australian pair are going to be strong too, it will be tough out there."

Tom Daley will make his first appearance of the Games at the Royal Commonwealth Pool this evening, but England team-mate Jack Laugher will hope to have won a second gold of the week by then. He teams up with Chris Mears (pictured) in the men's synchronised 3m springboard final which is just about to get under way, looking to make up for silver in the individual event after a mistake on his penultimate dive.

If perspective is needed, Laugher's diving partner Mears can probably help. Now 21, Mears was only given a 5% chance of survival after rupturing his spleen in Australia in 2009, and spent a month in hospital.

It's all over and if you're Australian, you'll be happy. Esther Qin and Maddison Keeney are the top two and head into tonight's final as the favourites. Tom Daley, a lad who knows a thing or two about diving, likes Keeney. "I'm going to tip this lady for a gold later, I am super impressed," he gushes.

England pair Alicia Blagg and Rebecca Gallantree - who surprised even themselves by winning the synchronised title on the 3m springboard - both qualify safely in 11th and 6th. Scotland's Grace Reid was seventh, England teenager Hannah Starling eighth.

It wasn't too difficult to qualify, with 13 competitors and 12 final places up for grabs. Tonga's Maria Zarka is the only one to miss out, finishing bottom of the pile.

BBC bowls commentator David Corkhill, speaking on BBC One: "Commiserations but I think it should also be congratulations to the England team. What a fantastic match, it went all the way down to the last end.

"South Africa played really good bowls, so did England, but when it comes down to a tied end there is so little in it and it can go to either side. South Africa just keep doing it year after year at the major events. They take away the gold medals."

"Heartbreak for Jersey as their 24-year wait for a Commonwealth medal continues. Katie Nixon and Lindsey Greechan look heartbroken as they stand and watch Ireland's Barbara Cameron and Mandy Cunningham celebrate bronze.

"Moments later a huge roar erupts on the next green as South Africa clinch gold against England in a tense finale. Jamie-Lea Winch and Natalie Melmore console one another with a hug in the middle of the green. Tears are flowing at Kelvingrove."

    News from the table tennis.

England's Paul Drinkhall was pushed hard in each of the games by Wales's Ryan Jenkins, but his quality tells in a 12-10 11-9 12-10 11-7.

England's 13th seed Andrew Baggaley has fallen in straight games, losing 11-5 11-8 12-10 11-8 to Canada's Zhen Eugene Wang.

Scotland's Gavin Rumgay has also come a cropper, going down to William Henzell 11-7 7-11 11-9 11-8 15-13.

Heartbreak for England, as South Africa's domination on the bowling greens of Kelvingrove continues with a 20-17 victory. In the end, having the final bowl in the extra end proves a decisive advantage for Tracy-Lee Botha and Colleen Piketh as Natalie Melmore and Jamie-Lea Winch are unable to challenge their stranglehold on the jack.

In a terrific match of see-sawing momentum swings, England will look back with pride on the way they fought back from 7-1 down, but they also had their chances in the latter stages, having led 16-11 with four ends to go. A second silver for Melmore, who also lost in the final of the women's singles, but sweet revenge for Piketh, who was defeated by Melmore in the semi-finals of that competition.

While the drama continues on the adjacent rink, cheers erupt from the Northern Ireland pair of Mandy Cunningham and Barbara Cameron who have secured bronze in the last end against Jersey, winning 15-14.

Jersey's wait for a first Commonwealth medal since 1990 goes on.

Drama at Kelvingrove as Natalie Melmore saves the match for England with the final bowl of the match! South Africa were lying two, having trailed 17-16 going into the final end, but Melmore sends down a laser-guided effort that clears one of the South African bowls out. 17-17 after 18 ends, and into an extra end we go...

Three rounds in at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh, with 13 divers in action and - slightly oddly - 12 final places up for grabs, which doesn't really make for a nail-biting competition.

After three rounds of the five, Australia's Esther Qin leads and looks mighty happy about it. Not so chuffed is poor old Maria Zarka from Tonga. She's in 13th and looking a cert to be the diver eliminated.

"There too much daylight between the thighs and the chest," says Tom Daley on BBC commentary duties before his 10m synchronised platform final this evening. Least she knows what she's got to work on when she returns home.

Usain Bolt has his "lightning bolt". Mo Farah has his "mobot". Scotland's Gavin Rumgay has, well, I don't think anyone has come up with a suitable name for wedgie-ing yourself in celebration.

    Douglas Rumgay

Rumgay's unique expression of joy, unveiled during the team event earlier this week, might not be getting many more outings. He trails Australia's Williams Henzell by two games to one in the men's singles third round and is down in the fourth.

You can watch live on the video streams to see if Rumgay can test the seams of his shorts once again.

    At ease Joe Joyce.

The Englishman was due to fight Uganda's Mike Sekabembe at 15:30 BST in the men's super heavyweight semi-final. No longer.

Sekabembe has failed a medical meaning Joyce is straight through to the weekend's final where he will face either Efe Ajagba of Nigeria or Australia's Joseph Goodall for gold.

With four ends to go, England have established a significant advantage in the gold medal match. They lead 16-11 after an excellent 14th end sees them pick up two despite South Africa having the final shot. But with four gold medals so far, South Africa have been the dominant bowling nation at Kelvingrove, so it's too early to count them out.

In the contest for bronze, Jersey's hopes of a first medal in any sport since 1990 are in the balance. They are level at 12-12 with Northern Ireland.

There are 13 divers in action at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh and 12 final places up for grabs - so one diver is going to feel pretty cheesed off in about an hour's time. Australia's Maddison Keeney and Esther Qin lead after the first of five rounds, with Alicia Blagg of England in fourth. Tonga's Maria Zarka is bringing up the rear, but there's plenty of time to move up a spot.
