Scotland's women are getting a noisy send-off from their home fans at the Glasgow National Hockey centre. Their final match of the Games is a play-off for fifth place against India.

So far it is scoreless but the Scots have managed more shots at goal with Susan McGilveray twice slapping goalwards from penalty corners, but failing to find the net on either occasion.

Jersey's last Commonwealth medals came in Auckland in 1990 when shooter Colin Mallett took individual gold and pairs bronze with his father, Cliff.

But the team's general manager Paul de Feu was not feeling the pressure to deliver podium presence before setting off to the 2014 Games.

"You could have the best performance of your life and still not get a medal because we can't stop other people being better than we are," he said.

"If we get a medal then I think that will keep the media happy, it'll keep the record books happy, but the bottom line is we're there to get these people to produce the times and the distances."

That seems a lot more sensible than targets that can be hit or missed on because of a slice of luck or exceptional opposition.

England have roared back into contention at Kelvingrove and they are now locked at 10-10 with South Africa at the halfway stage. From 7-1 down, the unrelenting accuracy of Natalie Melmore and Jamie-Lea Winch had propelled England into a 10-8 lead, but a good finish to the ninth end from South Africa's Colleen Piketh hauls them level again in this absorbing final.

In the bronze medal match, Jersey have opened up a 9-5 lead against Northern Ireland to raise hopes of their first medal in any sport since 1990.

Top of the pops today is an interview with the fathers of England divers Tonia Crouch and Sarah Barrow saying they "synchronised" at the pub after their daughters took silver in the pool.

"How heavy does the rain have to be for a bowls match to be stopped? It's tipping down at Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Centre but that is not dampening the enthusiasm of the die-hard spectators in the stands. There are cries of 'Come on England!' as Natalie Melmore and Jamie-Lea Winch take the lead against South Africa for the first time in their pairs gold match."

"So is Valentino (born on Valentine's Day) 'halfway there' in the squash doubles and sweeping all aside in a 'Blaze of Glory'?

    "I'm out," he said.

Tonight Australia team captain and Olympic champion Sally Pearson will go for gold against England's Tiffany Porter in the 100m hurdles in the final event of the night's athletics programme.

Pearson will not just have to overcome her rivals from other nations, but also some sniping from inside her own camp.

Eric Hollingsworth, Australian athletics head coach, has been suspended after accusing Pearson of setting a bad example by not appearing at the team camp last week.

Pearson has told BBC Radio 5 live that the public breakdown of their relationship has been a "huge distraction" in her build-up.

Pockets of pensioners dotted around the various stands with blankets covering their knees to keep away the cold. Every now and again there's a gentle ripple of applause. An inauspicious start for England's pair of Natalie Melmore and Jamie-Lea Winch over at Kelvingrove as South Africa open up a 7-1 lead after four ends. A big score of four in the second end from Tracy-Lee Botha and Colleen Piketh puts England almost immediately on the back foot, and they have plenty of work to do if they want to emulate the success of their compatriots in the women's triple yesterday.

Meanwhile, Jersey's bid for a first medal in 24 years is off to a better start. They lead Northern Ireland 4-3 in what has so far been a tight encounter.

It's an easy stereotype isn't it?

The University of Notre Dame were so taken by the supposed grit and tenaciousness of the Irish that their sports teams are all nicknamed "the Fighting Irish".

But, as BBC Sport's Ben Dirs explains, this generation of Irish boxing prospects has less to do with a national aptitude and more to do with hard work and high technology.

"The oft-repeated suggestion that boxing is simply in the blood of the Northern Irish people does not stand up to scrutiny," he writes.

"As with British amateur boxing's centre of excellence in Sheffield, which produced five medals at the London Olympics, Ireland's high performance programme involves a crack team of coaches, led by the legendary Billy Walsh, state-of-the-art equipment and the forensic monitoring of athletes."

If you are a Northern Irish fan at Glasgow 2014 there is really only one place to be today.

At the SECC nine Northern Irish boxers will be in semi-final action including captain Paddy Barnes and women's flyweight prospect Michaela Walsh.

It might be worth bunking down for the night if you are there for the Northern Irish action as well.

When asked how many of his team would convert a last-four spot to top step of the podium over the weekend, Barnes was unequivocal.

    "Nine," he replied without hesitation.

The action begins at 13:00 when Walsh fights India's Pinki Rani.

I don't remember anything of the actual race. I remember being on the start-line and being scared of the crowd. I always get nervous but the support was incredible. It follows you round the track and picks you up.

"I was 12 when, in 2008, I met Tanni Grey-Thompson, now my coach, and she asked me if I wanted to try it out. It was different and at first I didn't really like it. I had always walked with a prosthetic or crutches. I went to a mainstream school and had never seen disability sport before. But after a while I realised I wasn't bad and came to love it.

"Having Tanni as a role model has been incredible, she has been there for me, and after the race she got to present me with my medal, which was amazing."
