Everybody loves a relay race, if not only because there is the potential for an almighty meltdown. For those who are not into Schadenfreude, there are some top-class athletes taking part in the longer relay. Scotland are involved - minus 400m hurdles silver medallist Eilidh Child - and every successful baton exchange is greeted ecstatically by the home supporters. Jamaica lead by a country mile as they go into leg three...

Australian Maddison Keeney takes the lead after three rounds, with defending champion Canada's Jennifer Abel second.

But, hang on a minute, what's this? It's only Scotland's Gracie Reid in the bronze medal position. The Glasgow crowd are loving that.

Australia's Esther Qin had a bit of a nightmare third dive, dropping from first to sixth. Costly.

Scotland team-mate Jake Wightman will be watching from the stands as team-mate Chris O'Hare lines up for the final. Injury-hit Wightman's time of 3:34:87 was not enough to qualify as a fastest loser.

He tells BBC Two: "It's been a horrible couple of weeks. Thanks to the physios for getting me here but I'm sorry couldn't pull anything out."

If you're sat in the Hampden sunshine right now you could do with another pair of eyes. The action is everywhere. On the field it is lift off in the women's discus.

Australia's Dani Samuels is the overwhelming favourite to stand top of the podium. The 2009 world champion has recorded the eight longest throws in the Commonwealth this year and goes last in the 12-strong field.

"The narrow streets around the picture postcard Kelvingrove Bowls Centre are surrounded by wine bars and places to drink. All need to get extra staff in quick because there's another Scottish gold party brewing.

"Darren Burnett is closing in on the men's singles title against Canada's Ryan Bester, leading 13-7 It's a glorious summer's evening but the ice cream seller is redundant. No one is leaving their seat while this is on."

Scotland's Jayne Nisbit covers her streaky eyes with her hands as she fails to hold back the tears. And that, unfortunately, means one thing - she is out of the high jump final. She fails once, twice, no three times, at 1.82m. The 26-year-old crouches next to the barriers to be consoled by her coach.

"There are two ways of approaching competition - head down, 'game-face' on or head up and soaking it all in. England's 19-year-old Hannah Starling is definitely the latter, an infectious smile that certainly brings the crowd on side. She is someway down the standings at the moment though, but team-mate Rebecca Gallantree - who won 3m synchro gold with Alicia Blagg yesterday - is better placed."

Scotland's Chris O'Hare - a 2013 World Championship finalist - qualifies for the Commonwealth showpiece in fourth place in a time of 3:43:08.

He tells BBC Two: "I knew when we went through the first lap it would be a case of having to be in top four and just staying smooth.

"I didn't feel that great at the bell but I'm happy with that and happy to be in the final."

Parallel bars champion Nile Wilson, who now has a haul of four medals, on BBC Radio 5 live: "It felt amazing and I wouldn't even have dreamt of coming home with this amount of medals. I am one of the happiest 18 year olds alive. The high-bar was good and to finish with a gold was the icing on the cake.

"This whole experience has been unreal and the whole multi-sport village has been amazing. Now I am ready to go out and celebrate.

Silver medallist and fellow Englishman Kristian Thomas: "It is amazing when you put it into perspective. The performance of the British gymnasts shows the future bodes well"

'Geek' Maddie Hinch reaped the rewards of her extensive homework as she starred in England's penalty shoot-out win over New Zealand to clinch a final place against Australia on Saturday.

The 25-year-old goalkeeper saved two attempts to seal a 3-1 victory after the game ended 1-1. She said: "In hockey we tend to do all right with penalties, so we had a bit of confidence going into it. It's a case of the girls putting the goals in as well, so the fact they took them gave me some help as well.

"I'm renowned for being a bit of geek when it comes to these things. I had done a lot of homework before, so I knew what they would probably resort to doing under pressure. I felt ready and it was just a case of going out and executing."

Levern Spencer breezes over 1.82m in her first attempt, before being followed over the bar by Isobel Pooley. Clean starts. Not so by Jayne Nisbet who appears to be sailing over, then clips the bar with her heels. Cue groans from the home crowd.

The Caribbean paradise of St Lucia is renowned for golden beaches, not golden medals. Tonight, that could all change. Levern Spencer is tipped to become her nation's first Commonwealth champion as she contests the women's high jump. No-one in the field has jumped higher this year, but UK champion Isobel Pooley of England and Scottish hope Jayne Nisbet are aiming to challenge her.

Two black vest of New Zealand - belonging to Nick Willis and Zane Robertson - set the pace. The bell dings and Scotland's Chris O'Hare makes his move. The home favourite is helped round the back straight by the famed Hampden roar and he runs superbly to finish in a tightly-bunched top four. Job done by the Scot.

Team-mate Jake Wightman, whose parents both competed in Commonwealths of years gone by, finishes eighth.
