Brownlee dropping backpublished at 04:49 British Summer Time 5 April 2018

    Triathlon

Jonny Brownlee is actually being caught from behind, rather than closing the gap to Schoeman. He can still see the South African down the road but could miss out on a medal all together.

    Triathlon

    We're halfway through the run.

Olympic bronze medallist Henri Schoeman leads by 14 seconds over Marc Austin of Scotland and Jonny Brownlee.

One lap to go. 2500m. Can the British pair pull this back? It's not looking likely. Schoeman looks serene.

    Triathlon

So we have South African Henri Schoeman out in front. He is followed by Scotland's Marc Austin and Jonny Brownlee, maybe 10 seconds back.

Brownlee looks comfortable but he has a huge gap to make up. I'm not sure the Brownlees can pull this back.

Alistair's race definitely looks run. It's all on Jonny if the Brownlees are going to maintain their dominance.

South Africa's Henri Schoeman has blown this wide open. He has pulled away at the start of this 5k run and Alistair Brownlee can't match his pace. Brownlee is already around 20 seconds back.

Jonny Brownlee is still fighting but also has a fair amount of ground to make up.

But it is tough. Alistair is coming up to 30. He is a true champion and will give it all before giving up.

Schoeman a threat to Brownlees?published at 04:36 British Summer Time 5 April 2018

    Triathlon

This lead group looks to be in a class above the rest. They are pulling away from the field.

South Africa's Rio bronze medallist Henri Schoeman is in that group and is a threat to the Brownlees. Scotland's Marc Austin is still in the mix too.

We're 34 minutes in. About a kilometre to go until the second transition.

Just arrived at the Carrara Sports Centre and it is raining! Not much but definitely dark skies above.

The centre hosts badminton and weightlifting and is located next to the main Games stadium, where torrential rain fell during the opening ceremony yesterday.

Decent crowds on its way in for the next session at 0500 BST - England are due to get their badminton campaign under way against Uganda and the hosts Australia face South Africa in the mixed team group stage.

That's got to be a mental advantage (for the lead group) as they will be getting some timings from the coaches about the second group who have not made up any ground.

Who are you supporting here? Alistair all the way or do you want Jonny to finally beat his big bro? As an older brother myself I definitely wouldn't be showing any sympathy.

The surprising athlete in this lead group is New Zealand's Tayler Reid. He is ranked 81st in the world. Alistair Brownlee is having to do a lot of work on the front.

Three bike laps down now. There's just a 5k run after this remember.

By the way, it is still piddling down.

So much so that the organisers have deployed two volunteers on a golf cart to sling plastic ponchos to the crowd.

It is the look in the stands.

Whether the greasy roads will be quite so chic for the field remains to be seen.

    Triathlon

The good news is the rain has eased. There are a few England flags waving in the finish line which will give the Brownlees a boost.

Alistair is back on the front as they finish bike lap number two. Jonny is back in sixth. Both have plenty of pain etched on their faces but I think that's normal.

It seems that last time split back to the chasers was inaccurate. The Brownlee group, which includes four other riders, still leads by around 20 seconds.

Alistair Brownlee puts the work in on the front before dropping off alongside his brother, Jonny. Are they talking tactics? Can the brothers break up this field together?

We still have a group of six at the front but they chasing pack has closed the gap by 10 seconds on this second bike lap.

Australia’s golden girl Sally Pearson has confirmed she’s out of the Commonwealth Games.

She told a news conference she had known for a couple of days that she would have to withdraw from the hurdles and 4 x 100m relay at her home Games on the Gold Coast.

She described her emotions saying she was “gutted, absolutely gutted, tears flowing, almost like grief with a numbness phase and a crying phase.”

But she admitted she made the decision in the best interests of being fit for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Excellent work from Jonny Brownlee. He has bridged the gap to his brother along with a few other riders and we now have a group of six at the front.

The conditions are awful. It's not cycling weather at all. It's raining heavily now and the road must be greasy.

Can Alistair and Jonny Brownlee work together to see this one through?
