    Bowls

What's happened so far in the lawn bowls I hear you ask?

    Well...

In the women's singles England's Katherine Rednall lost to Emma Firyana Saroji, Scotland's Caroline Brown beat Jersey's Rachel MacDonald, Northern Ireland's Catherine Beattie beat Getrude Siame and Wales Laura Daniels beat Guernsey's Lucy Beere. All of these matches are the opening round robin matches.

The men's triples competition has also begun with Wales, Scotland and England winning their opening matches. Jersey also claimed an impressive win over Australia.

    Rack 'em up.

With a little over an hour to the off the men's field are tethered their steads in the transition zone.

Jonathan Brownlee, as so often, is ahead of the game.

He is already parked up in slot one. Brother Alistair is paying the prize for a series of injury lay-offs which mean he has raced only three triathlons since winning Rio 2016.

He is down in slot 11.

Meet Carina, Coralie and Denise - just three of a 15,000 strong army of volunteers at these Games.

They simply cannot do enough - whether it be helping get the right bus, pointing out routes or just filling you in on all things Australia.

They explained the wait for these Games dragged on and on, with many of them becoming aware they were chosen from the 47,000 applications over a year ago.

A 91-year-old offered the oldest application and there are people here doing the role from all corners of Australia.

They also tell me that many Gold Coast residents have bailed in fear of crowds, choosing this time as the best to go on holiday and get away from the madness.

I’m truth, it all feels pretty chilled so far and these smiling faces seem to be loving it.

The Aussie locals are on their feet at the swimming pool. The earlier rain has stopped and it's now bright blue skies at this open-air venue. The crowd are dancing in the stands to the YMCA, waving around inflatable kangaroos.

It's quite an atmosphere. There are some pretty cool places to be watching sport in Australia and this must be up there.

    Swimming - 50m butterfly

    Nick Hope
BBC Sport on the Gold Coast

Ben Proud’s start looked PHENOMENAL but apparently it was just too quick and the 50m fly world champion - who would have been the quickest qualifier - is disqualified!

Don’t think he’ll be able to overturn that with an appeal, so the Englishman will have to focus on 50m free next.

This could get ugly for Scotland. New Zealand - ranked 14 places higher in the world rankings than the Scots - have just scored for the fourth time in this pool match and we're only in the second quarter.

More impressive performances from the home nations in the pool.

England's Sarah Vasey qualifies fastest in the 50m breaststroke, Wales' Chloe Tutton, Scotland's Corrie Scott, the Isle of Man's Laura Kinley and England's Jocelyn Ulyett and Molly Renshaw also make it through to the semi-finals.

It has been a good showing in the pool so far.

New Zealand sweep home a second. Artistic stuff straight off the training ground. A penalty corner gets the full treatment with a dummy thrown in before a lashed finish by Kasey Smith.

As they left the warm-up area I heard one Scottish player say “come on girls, be positive.”

Another two goals early in the second quarter make it 4-0 and it’s a long way back now against a side ranked fourth in the world and among the medal contenders.

Wales' Non Stanford has told me she's 'pretty disappointed' with her eighth place finish this morning.

She admitted she didn't have the legs on the run but, as Team Wales captain, she wanted to show her teammates that you don't give up even when things aren't going you way.

    Got to respect that.

    Triathlon

Earlier on Jessica Learmonth won England's first medal of these Games with an impressive silver in the women's triathlon.

"It was an eventful race, I knew it would be in these conditions but it was fun all the same" she said.

"I always try to (start quickly), with swimming being my strength, there's no point in sitting back. I wanted hammer it from the front and I was hoping for a break to happen. I didn't run that well but luckily that didn't matter today.

"I couldn't hear any splits so I didn't know if they were catching me. I can't say I ever thought I was going to win it but I just held on. I kept looking behind me - I know it's a sign of weakness but I couldn't help it. I need to work on my poker face."

Ben Proud, the out and out favourite, seems to have been disqualified and he will be absolutely livid.

There'll be a protest. It looks like he went quickly but it's a controversial call.

A bit of a harsh call, that's a very brave judge to call that decision.

England's Ben Proud, the world champion and defending Commonwealth champion, absolutely smashes his heat going close to the world record but is disqualified!

It seems to be an issue with a twitch at the start. There wasn't much in that at all.

It's now raining at the swimming pool. With no roof on the stadium, this could be fun. We're into the 50m butterfly heats.

Dive in, swing your arms fast and get to the other end of the pool as quick as you can. Simple?

Northern Ireland's David Thompson wins his heat but Dylan Carter of Trinidad of Tobago goes even quicker a heat later.

One heat to go. The great South African Chad de Clos and England's Ben Proud are in this one.

“The sun is quite nice. I feel like a solar-powered swimmer. It’s great to get the first one out of the way. I’ve been on tenterhooks for the last week. ‘Is it race-time yet? Is it it race-time yet?’"
