    Triathlon

And they're out of the water and onto the bike.

Alistair is first into the saddle and has one rider for company as he sprints away on two wheels.

Jonny Brownlee is doing his best to bridge the gap to his brother.

Jonny Brownlee fourthpublished at 04:10 British Summer Time 5 April 2018

    Triathlon

Jonny Brownlee is back in fourth after seeming to take the wrong line off the pontoon. He was on his own out wide with Rio bronze medallist Henri Schoeman but is now fighting his way back onto the heels of his brother.

The pre-race suggestions are that Alistair's run isn't as strong as it has been due to recent injuries so he needs a good start here.

We've had it confirmed. Australian star Sally Pearson is out of the Commonwealth Games with injury.

    She is unsurprisingly gutted.

    Triathlon

The course was a picture for the women's event earlier but now looks more like a British April day rather a classic scorcher down under.

The clouds have rolled in and it's choppy. The sea looks grey rather than the bright blue of earlier.

Alistair Brownlee has made a strong start. He's hit the front early on.

Like the women's event earlier, this men's triathlon is over a sprint distance.

    First up a 750m sprint, then a 20km cycle, followed by a 5km run.

Alistair Brownlee is a two-time Olympic and world champion and is defending Commonwealth champion. Can he add to his titles?

The media are gathering for the Sally Pearson announcement at 0400 BST.

The Australian, who is the face of the Games and who hails from the Gold Coast, is expected to say she won’t be able to compete in the either the hurdles or relay because of injury.

The 2012 Olympic hurdles champion’s build-up to her home Games have been hampered by an Achilles’ tendon injury.

Joining Pearson will be team doctor Paul Blackman and athletics head coach Craig Hilliard.

    Triathlon

The Brownlees are the clear favourites for this triathlon but a cat is currently being placed well and truly amongst the pigeons.

The weather has taken a turn for the worst.

A tropical storm is blowing further north and it's currently cloudy, raining and fairly blustering on the Gold Coast.

How will that affect Jonny and Alistair?

A little more fuel for the fire, a little more air in the tyre.

Jonathan Brownlee gives the trackpump a couple more pushes to ensure his bicycle is fully primed and ready to go.

Once he is done, he wanders down to pass the pump to brother Alistair.

One of the English pair's main rivals is likely to be Jacob Birtwhistle.

The Australian is a sprint-race specialist and has benefitted from training alongside two-time world champion Mario Mola.

Girlfriend Amelia Wyllie, sister Alex, mother Carmen and father Alan are in the stands to cheer him on.

Any insight into his mental state ahead of the off? Nope, apparently he goes completely off radar a couple of days before each race.

The Southport Broadwater Parklands venue has a beer garden vibe for spectators taking a bit of a break between the men's and women's races.

Although I'm sure it is mostly isotonic and freshly mined mineral water for this crowd.

You can hear the cheers from the swimming venue's huge Westfalenstadion-style stands. It is only about 500m between there and where the Brownlee brothers will take the plunge at the sound of the hooter.

This, by the way, is the bridge of no return. The field have to do a long ring walk from the sanctuary of their changing areas, past the grandstand, through the transition zone and finally out onto the pontoon where the race starts.

    No turning back now.

He was controversially disqualified for what seemed a minor twitch on the start line. Make your own minds up below.

Scottish defending champion Ross Murdoch cruises through his heat in the men's 200m breaststroke.

Murdoch won a memorable gold in Glasgow in 2014 but nearly quit the sport after a poor showing in Rio.

He's made the perfect start down under. He qualifies for the final fastest. Fellow Britons James Wilby, Andrew Willis, Calum Tait and Craig Benson have also reached tonight's final.

That should be a thriller at 12:44 BST later today.

If it wasn’t bad enough for Scotland, that blue thing on Ali Howe’s arm is an ice pack. She’s in some pain and briefly leaned against the dugout with her eyes closed. This is a brutal game, sprints, collisions and bruises to be had everywhere you look.

New Zealand look every bit the side many fancy to medal and as Howe’s leg briefly trembles below me, her team mates look like their race is run. Isotonic drinks are grabbed and are very much needed as we hit half-time at 4-0.
