    Triathlon

England's Jessica Learmonth and Bermuda's Flora Duffy are taking it in turns to put in the hard yards at the front on the bike.

The pair already have a huge lead of around 39 seconds ahead of England's Sophie Caldwell who is currently in the bronze medal position. They are roared back into the finish straight as they finish the first lap on the bike.

    Finish line

This is the goal for today's triathletes.

The finish line lies a 750m swim, 20k cycle and 5km run away from the pontoon start.

And if the naked eye can't split them after all that, there is state-of-the-art laser equipment to help out.

Lovely day for it, bright, breezy and not a hint of last night's rain.

    Triathlon

This is a mighty impressive start from England's Jessica Learmonth in the triathlon. She is first out of the water and first onto the bike. World champion Flora Duffy is right on her wheel.

They now have four laps of the cycle circuit ahead. Non Stanford and Vicky Holland are a fair way further.

Former world champion Laura Daniels is the first Welsh competitor at these Games.

She is no stranger to success in the Southern Hemisphere having won the world pairs title in New Zealand in 2016 with teammate Jess Sims. She also won the Women’s World singles champion of champion titles in Sydney last November.

Daniels is playing Lucy Beere from Guernsey in the women’s singles who won the world singles title just a few weeks ago and poses a genuine challenge.

Ross Owen, Stephen Harris and Jonathan Tomlinson also compete in the Men’s Triples this morning.

    Triathlon

It does indeed look a bit choppy out there. The pace isn't the quickest. England's Jessica Learmonth is currently leading the way, closely followed by two-time reigning world champion Flora Duffy of Bermuda.

Duffy is bidding to win only Bermuda's second gold medal – and the first of any colour by a woman.

David is one of 15 lifeguards who will follow the swim pack in case any of the field get into difficulty.

Considering the women’s final is only 26 strong, they have themselves well covered.

But, as you can see from the flags on the north stand, it will be choppy out there.

OK then. Here we go. These women triathletes are all stood on the pontoon about to dive into the ocean.

The flags are flickering a little behind them but the water looks pretty calm.

On your marks.... Beeeeeeeep. In they go. We are away in the first medal event of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

If you missed it earlier, the Games got under way in spectacular style down under at the opening ceremony, held at the Carerra Stadium.

The ceremony started in torrential rain - think Grimsby rather than Gold Coast - but there was quite a show put on by the hosts.

Watch the best of the action below.

It doesn't matter who you are, you are going through the scanner.

New Zealand's Andrea Hewitt - ranked third in the women's field - completes her security obligations on the way into the Southport Broadwater Parklands venue.

Perhaps she will have a medal to drop into the tray on the way out.

Non Stanford and Vicky Holland actually used to live together but today they are rivals.

Triathlon experts among you will be aware both the men's and women's triathlon competitions are being held over a sprint distance for the first time at these Games.

They'll start with a 750m swim, then get on the bike for 20km before a 5km run.

    Tom Brown

The women's triathlon is the first medal event of the Games and Wales' captain wants to get her team off to the ideal start.

Non Stanford missed the 2014 Commonwealths due to injury and finished an agonising fourth behind teammate Vicky Holland at her first Olympics.

The 2013 world champion says a medal today would make up for all that disappointment.

A typically upbeat welcome from Janaya on the triathlon welcome desk. Volunteers at the Games have been encouraged to use the Aboriginal greeting of Jingeri alongside the more familiar - to a British ear at least - 'G'Day'.

These two are Mascoteers - basically bodyguards for mascot Borobi.

They have momentarily lost their client, but I reckon a seven-foot blue Koala can look after himself for the time being.
