    Men's marathon

Callum Hawkins picks up another bottle as he passes the water station, luckily this one is easier to get into.

A chomp of an electrolyte gel, a swig of the water and a placing of a fresh white cap. He goes through his routine and then cracks on.

He's past the halfway point in 1:07:44 and, most importantly, in the lead.

    Men's marathon

Callum Hawkins is living up to his billing as pre-race favourite. The Scot turned down the bucks at big-city marathons, including London, to win a medal here and is controlling the race as the leaders pass through the 20km mark in 1:04:22.

A good job from Scotland in the opening period and they've got a two-point lead to take into the second quarter.

The Scots are working at a 60% field goal percentage, with New Zealand on 50%. Where are the defences?

It's making for an exciting match!

No cracks appearing in that quartet at the front of the women's marathon. Aussie pair Jess Trengove and Lisa Weightman, along with Kenya's Sheila Jerotich and Namibia's Helalia Johannes are coasting along with about 12km left.

English pair Sonia Samuels and Alyson Dixon are about a minute behind, with Wales' Caryl Jones down in ninth place.

The action is underway in the all-English mixed doubles gold medal match, as Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith take on Gabby and Chris Adcock.

Will they defend their title? It's a close contest in the early stages.

    Men's T54 marathon

In the men's T54 marathon, there were two medals for England as John Smith won silver and Simon Lawson claimed bronze.

Speaking on BBC TV, Smith said:

"I'm happy that I prepared right. The course itself was very technical, which I like - I like a hard race.

"I came out here to win gold and I strongly believe I was good enough to win the gold. I promise everyone, if i'm not the best today then I'll be best tomorrow. I want to be the best in the world."

    Compatriot Lawson added:

"It was quite technical, it was a lot better than I thought it would be when I had a drive round - it looked tight but once you were out there it was a good course.

"I've been here two weeks and the first week I wasn't ready to race but by the start of this week I was itching to get going.

"Hearing our names shouted around the course, it was really cool."

What an electric start by Scotland. Gareth Murray floats in a three from way downtown and there's Jonny Bunyan to add a second three-pointer in quick succession.

    Scotland lead by six!

Oh no, this is a sad sight. Namibia's Namupala Reonard is one of those in the leading group, but pulls up with what looks like a muscle injury.

Reonard bravely tries to continue, but is limping heavily. He stops once again, falling to the floor in disappointment/pain, taking off his trainers and flinging them away in frustration. That's what it means. All that hard work snatched away...

The rest are through the 15km mark now, Australia's Liam Adams and Scotland's Callum Hawkins leading them.

Big news....Callum Hawkins has managed to crack the water bottle! The Scottish athlete takes on board some much needed fluid. But then he can't get his cap back on his head.

He's one of about a dozen men in the leading group as they jog along the scenic coastline. Looks like a scene out of Home and Away. Very pleasant.

    Women's marathon

Australia's Jess Trengove has a huge grin plastered over her face as she passes the 25km mark. That's because she's in the lead.

Huge crowds are lining the street, four or five deep, many waving Australian flags to cheer on their athlete.

Hot on her heels are Kenya's Sheila Jerotich, Namibia's Helalia Johannes and another Aussie Lisa Weightman, who has fought back to join the leading group.

The bad news is that England's Sonia Samuels and Alyson Dixon have dropped off the pace.

Earlier, England's Jade Jones won bronze in the women's T54 marathon, after winning the triathlon earlier in the Games.

She's been speaking on BBC TV:

"All my training was focused towards triathlon, so anything today was a bonus really. To come away with bronze is amazing.

"A lot has happened since Rio - Rio was really tough for me. I've worked so hard in the last two years and I'm a lot stronger now than I was back then."

Callum Hawkins, wearing a snapback white baseball cap and shades, looks like he's on a lads' trip to Ibiza. Marathon running ain't no holiday, though, let me tell you. Especially not in this morning Gold Coast sun. Looks beautiful out there.

Hawkins has been hauled back in by the chasing pack, Australia's Liam Adams taking over. Hawkins's biggest opponent at the moment is the bottle of water he's just picked up. He can't get the top off with his hands or his teeth.
