England’s Jade Jones-Hall has already taken the triathlon title at these Games and could be in the medal hunt here.

So too could be Scotland’s double sprint world champion Sammy Kinghorn. She has just one marathon under her belt – coming fifth in Chicago last October – but has been identified as “a very serious contender” by Australian rival Madison de Rozario.

De Rozario who won the T54 1500m earlier in the week and is world champion over 5000m.

Canada’s former world champion Diane Roy (1189) is another likely contender, while Nicole Emerson also represents England in the seven-strong field.

    Men's T54 marathon

Kurt Fearnley wasn't joking. He made a rapid start in the men's race and is now leading by one minute and 40 seconds with about a quarter of the race to go. If you're not familiar with this event let me tell you: that is a whopping lead.

English pair Simon Lawson and John Smith, along with Canada's Tristan Smyth, are battling for the medal positions behind him.

“I’ll be screaming at myself to get it all out…it’s going to hurt like hell. I want it to…I’m so bloody fired up for it."

It’s fair to say Kurt Fearnley refuses to be denied his fairytale ending as he competes for Australia one last time.

The seven-time Paralympic medallist had to settle for silver in his last race on the track, the T54 1500m on Tuesday, but this marathon will be a 26.2 mile lap of honour whatever the result.

Canada’s Alexandre Duponte beat Fearnley to gold on the track earlier this week and he competes again here.

Three of the nine athletes in action are English: 2017 Great North Run wheelchair winner Simon Lawson, John Smith and Callum Hall.

I hate getting out of bed before 6am under any circumstances, never mind a marathon. But that's what the para-athletes have had to do in the Gold Coast.

Both the men's and women's T54 marathon finals are under way in the early morning sunshine.

Early bird catches the worm, they say. Two early birds are going catch gold medals.
