It's fair to say that is maybe the cagiest opening half of football that we have watched in Croke Park in quite a while.

It really hasn't been easy on the eye as both sides retreated into mass defences and are conservative in their approach to attack, nerves and fear of what the other team can do.

Shane McGuigan has produced the moments of magic for the men in red and white with four superb scores.

David Clifford has been relatively quiet and has been marshalled quite well by Chrissy McKaigue despite kicking two points.

Kerry have kicked five wides to Derry's four.

All to play for in the second half with a last four date with Armagh at stake.

It's strange the way the game's being played at the minute.

I suppose this is part of the frustrations with tactics, we can all understand why the teams play this way but if it was a completely open game it would be a spectacular thing to watch I would imagine and I think there would be little between the teams.

But we know teams want to be careful and patient.

A fair bit of shadow-boxing going on here.

We can only hope this one will catch fire like Galway and Dublin's quarter-final did yesterday evening.

One of the things that we were half expecting was Kerry to come out and really try to enforce themselves on this game with a high pace to try and maybe create a few doubts in Derry's confidence but if they were planning that, we're 15 minutes in and it's failed.

  17. Donegal beat Louth to set up Galway All-Ireland semi-finalpublished at 15:31 British Summer Time 30 June

    Donegal 1-23 Louth 0-18 (FT)

Donegal wore down Louth to book their place in the All-Ireland Football semi-finals for the first time since 2014 with a 1-23 to 0-18 win at Croke Park.

The Ulster champions were strong favourites to see off the beaten Leinster finalists and led 0-11 to 0-8 at the break.

Louth, who combined spirit with high-quality shooting at times, ran out of steam in a dull second half, with their challenge killed off by Eoghan Ban Gallagher's 58th-minute goal.

Kerry are lying deep in that defensive shape and they'll have to just watch that they're not sitting too deep and leaving spaces because Derry will expose it like Conor Glass did there.
