A fantastic battle between Ajinkya Rahane and Dale Steyn concludes with the fast bowler coming out on top. Three searing yorkers are marked in the scorebook as dots, then Rahane swipes the next one over mid-off for six. Steyn's response? Another fast, straight ripper which pins the little right-hander in front. Plumb.

"It was a slower ball bouncer, not only a good catch but very good field placing from AB de Villiers. He had the man 15 yards in front of square which is very unusual for a fast bowler, feather in the cap to AB de Villiers."

Suresh Raina falls to the short ball yet again. Just a couple of balls after being dropped in the deep by substitute fielder Rilee Roussow, the stocky left-hander does the same again and pulls a short ball down the throat of Roussow at deep square leg.

Suresh Raina is the new man to the crease and he shows magnificent hands to guide a short ball past backward point for four. The next six overs should be entertaining.

Just woken up? You missed a belter of a game in Dunedin, where Afghanistan fell narrowly short of a shock win over Sri Lanka in Pool A.

Sri Lanka, runners-up in the 2011 World Cup final, scraped home by four wickets with only 10 balls to spare against the minnows, who were playing only their second game in the tournament's history.

Chasing 233, Sri Lanka lost both openers to first-ball ducks as they slipped to 18-3 and 51-4. Although Mahela Jaywardene's superb 100 - his 19th century in ODIs - rescued them somewhat, it needed an unbeaten 47 off 26 balls from Thisara Perera (above) to see them over the line.

The MCG rises as one to salute a fantastic innings from Shikhar Dhawan. His destructive 146-ball knock comes to an end when he swivels on a short ball from left-arm quick Wayne Parnell and shovels a catch to Hashim Amla at fine leg.

He's slight in frame and it looks like his helmet is too big for him, but Ajinkya Rahane has so much power. He steps back and plants Imran Tahir back over his head for a six, then cracks a single into the off side. Another nine added to the score.

What an incredible atmosphere the Indian supporters are generating inside the MCG. It's brilliant to see such a pure love of this magnificent sport. Ajinkya Rahane gets stuck into Wayne Parnell and swats him for six into the leg side. India have their foot on the throat of this Proteas bowling attack.

  13. 50 for Rahane (off 40 balls)published at 06:40 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

I've got to admit... some of this strokeplay from Shikhar Dhawan is mind-blowing. He picks up a decent length ball from Morne Morkel and just flicks it past backward square leg for a maximum.

The tall, rangy Morkel responds with a couple of rippers which beat the outside edge. A gentle single allows Dhawan to return to the non-striker's end for a breather and a little smile as the 100 partnership comes up off 83 balls. Ajinkya Rahane is also batting well as he brings up his half-century with a single of his own.

Shikhar Dhawan is on fire now. He gets hold of a Dale Steyn slower ball and blasts it over mid-on for six, then leans back in his crease and guides four down to third man. The great fast bowler has no answer to this onslaught.

"As is often the case when the Indian cricket team roll into town, you might as well be on India. The supporters are making so much noise that AB de Villiers has been struggling to hear his bowlers asking for a field change, despite being a matter of yards away.

"The DJ's choice of old-school Bollywood tracks and modern day hits is adding to the party atmosphere. The incoming clouds are threatening to rain on India's progress but it seems unlikely that even the unpredictable Melbourne weather can dampen this excitable Indian crowd."

  18. Ind 214-2 (Dhawan 114, Rahane 48)published at 06:30 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Morne Morkel, like Dale Steyn before him, is getting tennis ball-like bounce from back of a length and that is keeping the batsmen wary as they continually get a whiff of leather. Ajinkya Rahane is no mug though and when the ball is pitched up it is belted back past the bowler for four. Go fetch. His next effort? He gives himself room and clatters Morkel through the covers for another boundary.

Dale Steyn looks like he's been to the barber's with James Anderson. Like the England quick, he's sporting one of those trendy haircuts where a short, back and sides is complemented by a finely-coiffed comb-over on the top. You'd never see Merv Hughes sporting such looks.

Steyn is roaring in and he gets one to beat Shikhar Dhawan's outside edge and the keeper takes the ball at head height. Quick. Two from the over.
