  2. Gayle 100published at 05:44 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

West Indies take the batting powerplay (as late as they're allowed) - and Gayle chops Masakadza for a single to long-off to bring up his 22nd ODI century. He removes his helmet and lifts his bat to the crowd, but there's only the tiniest hint of a smile. Time to tee off?

  4. WI 165-1 (Gayle 99*, Samuels 56*)published at 05:43 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

Raza to bowl his last over, Gayle is inching towards his century, one run at a time. Three singles means Raza takes his cap with final figures of 0-45.

  6. WI 162-1published at 05:40 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

A Samuels single brings Gayle on strike against Masakadza, who bowls at the sort of pace Gayle normally demolishes. But he's happy to progress in singles for now, as is Samuels. While the rain seems to have abated a little, there's most certainly a powerplay on the horizon.

David Wallace in Spain: My impression of the Windies in this tournament is that the run rate does step up dramatically when Sammy and Russell are in.

Gayle, on 95, to face Raza's part-time spin. Fireworks are expected, so naturally, we get... a maiden over. Really.

"Samuels looked like a cat on a hot tin roof early on. He has definitely changed gears here - and he needed to. A strike rate of 50 is unacceptable in one-day cricket."

Plenty of noise from the Zimbabwe fans as this second-wicket stand pushes into the 150s and, having reached his half-century, Samuels does seem to have stepped up the pace, hustling for ones and twos against Masakadza's medium-pace trundles.

  12. Samuels 50published at 05:32 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

Marlon Samuels reaches his 26th ODI fifty (from 95 balls) with a single, his partner Gayle is into the not-particularly-nervous nineties, and Raza has taken 0-42 from his eight overs.

And stay tuned for the interval between innings on TMS - they'll be hearing from England captain Charlotte Edwards about her 200th game as national skipper, as well as checking in with Kevin Howells to look ahead to Ireland's game against the UAE tomorrow.

Former Australia batsman Tom Moody: With rain about in Canberra it's puzzling to why Marlon Samuels is batting at a 42.1 strike rate?

  14. WI 149-1published at 05:28 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

The Canberra weather forecast has changed from a 50% chance of rain, to a 30% chance... of thunderstorms. Gulp. Masakadza, who can "beat batsmen with lack of pace" according to TMS's Neil Manthorp, is tidy but unthreatening - the batsmen take two singles apiece.

"He's so much in third gear that he's even hitting his sixes softly. He's not smashed one out of the ground; they've just been flopping over the boundary, not taking out anything bigger than the eight iron."

Gayle takes the aerial route against Raza, and it's just over the top of Craig Ervine at long-on - he took a stunning catch in that region (at long-off to a right-hander) to dismiss South Africa's AB de Villiers last week, but this time it's just out of his reach. Raza dries the ball with a towel between deliveries - not an ideal situation for a spinner to have to grip a wet ball, if you remember England's Graeme Swann throwing a bit of a strop during the 2011 World Cup in similar circumstances. A couple of wides mean it's 14 off the over.

  18. WI 131-1published at 05:21 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

The burly Hamilton Masakadza into the attack for some right-arm medium pace - he has a splodge of bright yellow zinc cream across his nose and cheeks, looking for all the world like it's a protective plaster. It's business as usual for Chris Gayle as a single takes him to 9,000 ODI runs since his debut on 11 September 1999, against India in the cricketing hotbed of... Toronto.

Heart-in-mouth time for Gayle as he nearly chops Raza onto his stumps but gets a fortunate inside edge past the keeper. Zimbabwe are throwing themselves around in the field with enthusiasm, but they really, really need a wicket.
