"It was a relatively straightforward catch. He was diving forward but it should have been taken. That's not good enough. Zimbabwe will be very disappointed with that. They kept West Indies in check and they have just let them go."

"That is a big break for West Indies. That would have been a very big wicket. It wasn't that hard a chance."

  3. Dropped catchpublished at 04:41 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

Time for some part-time off-spin from opening batsman Sikandar Raza, going round the wicket to the right-handed Samuels and keeping him contained with five dot balls before he spins a wide down the leg side as keeper Brendan Taylor removes the bails. The extra delivery is outside off stump - Samuels cuts and is dropped by young paceman Tendai Chatara at backward point.

  5. WI 72-1 (Gayle 41*, Samuels 27*)published at 04:38 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

Is this measured Windies partnership a calm before the storm? (On a related note, we've heard rumours that it might rain at some point). Chigumbura's third over yields a single and a two - it's overcast in Canberra, but dry so far.

  6. WI 69-1published at 04:35 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

"Hustle" is not a word that would come up in Chris Gayle predictive text - he hammers Williams to long-on and barely breaks into a light jog as he takes a single (I can't honestly use the phrase "runs" here). But after an exchange of singles, Gayle shows his power by bludgeoning the slow left-armer over square leg for a first-bounce four, taking one hand off the bat.

"Gayle has been awful but he's still in and this bowling looks underwhelming if they don't get some more early wickets. Cyclone Chris looms."

  8. WI 61-1 (Gayle 33*, Samuels 24*)published at 04:31 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

Some Gayle stats for you from Opta - he averages 14.9 in 17 ODI innings on Australian soil, and his ODI average against Zimbabwe of 57.3 is his highest against any Test-playing nation. Is this slow build-up the sign he's getting his mojo back? He's taken 37 balls to score 33 - while Samuels is plodding along with 24 from 45 after taking a couple of twos against skipper Chigumbura.

"I think the pitch will hold its bounce pretty well and turn later in the match. With the size of this field and the deep boundaries straight, it's a good place to bowl spin."

  10. WI 57-1published at 04:27 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

Chris Gayle is never a man to expend more energy than he needs, whether bowling off-spin off two paces or standing at first slip with his hands in his pockets. This game feels like a training exercise for the two Jamaicans as they plunder some ones and twos against Williams.

  12. WI 51-1 (Gayle 30*, Samuels 18*)published at 04:24 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

Skipper Elton Chigumbura on at the Swimming Pool End, but for how long will the West Indies keep treading water here? Chigumbura, right-arm medium-fast, fires the first wide of the innings down the leg side to bring up the fifty stand. Samuels moves to 18 with a pedestrian single and even Gayle lets one go by outside off stump.

  14. WI 49-1published at 04:20 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

Now able to post a maximum of four fielders outside the 30-yard circle (rather than two), Zimbabwe turn straight to the left-arm spin of Sean Williams, but Gayle dutifully plays out five dot balls... before, with a maiden over on the cards, Gayle launches the last over long-on for six. Will the real Chris Gayle please stand up?

  17. WI 43-1published at 04:17 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

Umpire Ian Gould, dressed in teal blue today in sharp contrast to West Indies' maroon and Zimbabwe's bright red with yellow trim, signals to Chatara that he's had one bouncer for the over against Samuels - and when he gives the right-hander some width outside off stump, Samuels helps himself to his third boundary with a fluent cut shot for four. That's it for the first 10-over powerplay - four an over, positively sedate by modern standards.

Jay:, external Re: Mark Butcher's tweet - 7 overs. The tech isn't 100% accurate. That's why these 'clipping instances' are umpire's calls. Not that ridiculous.

  19. WI 39-1published at 04:13 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

No bowling changes yet - Gayle fails to connect with a slog-sweep at Panyangara, but does better with a more delicate chip over mid-wicket for two. Gayle continues to play himself in carefully against the right-armer, who has seven men on the off side.
