"There was a bit of width but he hit it straight to the fielder and MacLeod looks extremely disappointed as he walks off. That wasn't a great ball, but he bowled some beauties before in that over and MacLeod thought he could get his innings under way."

A terrible start for Scotland as Calum MacLeod loses his wicket in a sloppy manner - slapping a short, wide effort straight to the fielder at point. Catching practice.

Shapoor Zadran takes the new ball for Afghanistan. The left-arm seamer runs in from a different postcode - it's easily the longest run-up in this tournament. Apparently he covers 6km in a game - the boy must be as fit as a fiddle. Tall and gangly, he's generating decent bounce and pushing the ball across Scotland's two right-handed openers. Just a single from a mis-field in the opening over.

"The opening bowlers, the two Zadrans, looked superb in their last match. They bowled fast whereas the Scotland openers, apart from Kyle Coetzer, have not looked as good.

"Afghanistan are full of passion, and in addition to the bowlers also have a couple of really good batsmen. I think Scotland have a game on here but they won't be as worried as they would have been facing England, for example."

Afghanistan's players, to a man, have one hand on their heart and one behind their backs as they proudly sing their national anthem. It's a long one.

The two teams stride out alongside mascots underneath a perfect blue sky in Dunedin. Time for the national anthems.

"These sides know each other pretty well and Scotland won their last meeting emphatically. They should be less nervous except there's history to be made - for both sides. The Scots are in their third World Cup so really want to break their duck. From what we've seen I've been slightly more impressed by Afghanistan, but it's only been two games."

Afghanistan all-rounder Mirwais Ashraf, who took 2-29 from eight overs against Sri Lanka, has been ruled out of the tournament with a side strain, so wicketkeeper-batsman Shafiqullah comes into the 15-man squad.

Batsman Javed Ahmadi says Afghanistan have been buoyed by their performance against the Sri Lankans.

"We lost that game, but we learned a lot of things. The last six months, that is what we were practicing for, playing against a full member. So hopefully we will be ready for Scotland," he said.

  16. Coleman backs the Scotland bowlerspublished at 21:41 Greenwich Mean Time 25 February 2015

Scotland beat Afghanistan by 150 runs in a pre-World Cup warm-up match in Dubai January, after dismissing their fellow associate side for 63, and Freddie Coleman hopes the Scotland bowlers can put on a repeat performance in Dunedin.

"It's obviously very different conditions to what we faced in the Abu Dhabi game and that was obviously a very successful day for our bowlers," the Scotland batsman said.

"But even there it swung around a bit and nipped around so hopefully we can get the same sort of movement out of this pitch."

  19. Welcome to Dunedinpublished at 21:39 Greenwich Mean Time 25 February 2015

Scotland and Afghanistan have never won a match at the World Cup, but barring a rain storm at Dunedin, one of the associate sides will put an end to that sorry record tonight.

Both sides have impressed at moments during this World Cup, with Scotland taking seven New Zealand wickets in their defeat to the co-hosts in Dunedin, while Afghanistan caused Sri Lanka a few nervy moments at the same venue before the 1996 world champions prevailed.

The teams have met have met eight times in ODIs, with Afghanistan winning five of them.
